“Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons.”
    ― Ron Paul

Not quite. Freedom can be infringed on by private entities, as well as the government. Government regulation is sometimes the only way of protecting our freedom from the corporations. BTW, Ron Paul is a crackpot and corrupt fraud who shils for the Stansberry Research Group.

The Founding Fathers of America said as they drafted the nation's Constitution that if men were angels, we would not need a government. Unfortunately, without government many men turn criminal so they could trespass on others as they go about enriching themselves. The Extreme Right faction in the American population has been fed a line of Bull Shit about our government being bad; when, in fact, it is the best in the world. America's government works. It provides services to its people and provides safety by arresting extremists who wish to use violence against others.

When Libertarians are defined as the Extreme Right, we've taken a wrong turn.

I didn't mention Libertarians. I said Extreme Right. Why did YOU equate the two?

Mostly because we're in the Libertarian sub-forum-thingie, not the Extreme Right sub-forum-thingie. It seemed like you might be equating the Libertarian mistrust of Big Government with something else.

So you ... in a moment of candor ... admit that distrust of government, Extreme Right Wing fanaticism, and even Libertarianism have things in common.

Freedom is the bank allowing you to breath their air and drink their water. Some cities in Asia, the bank will even sell you cans of fresh air out of vending machines. I would ask them for more freedom, but the guard doesn't like me. Maybe Ron Paul can ask the bank for more freedom, but its overpriced if you ask me.

Many of the founders said basically the same thing the Ron Paul quote says. They said yes a government was necessary, but should be as small as possible. The Anti-Federalists gave us the bill of rights because they wanted to ensure the government did not overstep their bounds, which were defined in the Constitution.

It's my impression that they are hand in hand with the extreme right. But perhaps you would like to talk policy. I think that the agenda that I sense is a militant approach to eliminating all forms of taxation for example.

Your impression is spot on. Lunatic Ron Paul and his looney son Rand are examples of what libertarianism tends to mean in practice. Both are extremist shils for the robber barons who are out to get us and our liberties--Rand catering to coal, oil and gas interests. His simplistic arguments attacking the notion that the rich should pay their fair share in taxes is a case in poin:t "punishing the rich means the poor lose their jobs." .I recall the Libertarian who came to my class back in my college years to spout the party line. "National defense? Pass the hat."

The poor and starving: pass the hat. Check out the dumpsters. The existence of and taxation for fire departments: pass the hat. Fight your own damn fire. Police departments: Pass the hat. Oh--and arm up. Infrastructure? We don't need no stinkin' roads, bridges , stop lights and such, etc paid for by taxes.: pass the hat. National defense: Just let everyone have any and all weapons extant. That'll scare them --there Ruskys and Chinese. Melt all them tanks and boats and such down into scrap , sell it and give the money to the corporate class. They deserve it--they create ALL the jobs and they will see that it trickles down. And uh---keep your powder dry.

Libertarianism; Nobody should have the power to arbitrarily abrogate my property rights and essential freedoms to build a lead smelter next to an elementary school (or to hang a 'WHITES ONLY' sign in the window of my fried chicken restaurant).

What a great drawing. I’m 75 and I’ve seen it....the poisoned school children in Kellog,Idaho, the arsenic at Milltown, Mt from Anaconda, mesothelioma at Libby from WR Grace vermiculite, and the epidemic of cancer among my grade school classmates who grew up bathed in agriculture chemicals on Wisconsin dairy farms. The dirty caveat of capitalism is that profit at the expense of the public is fine.

You're gonna have a hard time finding people with the depth of comprehension required to understand what you're talking about, much less have an informed debate.

The left want to control your finances, the right want to control your social actions. Libertarians are center and don't want either controlled any more than necessary for a peaceful society.

Libertarian philosophy is basically do what you want unless it infringes on someone else. Pretty simple philosophy and the basic precepts on which this country was founded.

Those who don't like the Pauls are just listening to their side (who seek control). They haven't actually listened to them with an open mind. Nor can they, because they'd be excommunicated from their tribe.

You're a walking ( or should I say "Trudgin' " ) example of that. "Depth" and "informed" are conspicuously absent from your posts.

I think anybody listening to them with an open mind would come to the conclusion that they're both crackpots.

I'm a linguist, and can mathematically dissect every fucking word such people spout, and its all as empty and meaningless as it gets, and the assholes will never support even teaching a child how to use a dictionary, because they are still living in the dark ages. Which is why their population has been imploding, ever since the invention of modern contraceptives.
