FDR ordered the creation of the bomb. Truman dropped it. Christians. Oppenheimer was quite possibly Hindu. Though he was a scientist, he probably enjoyed the poetry of it.

Saying all the worlds evil is putting words in my mouth. That's the sort of black and white dynamic to expect I suppose. :D

I'll stand by it. 50€ says there's more atheists developing weapons than religious. Money down, come on boys. Money down.

I'm not taking that bet. People who are developing weapons are probably well educated scientists. I'd give that like a 90-10 atheists.

But your basic good old boy ground infantry shooting heavy weapons powered by bionic legs, their commanders, and the people who are in charge of whipping the public into a frenzy of hating the other guys are at least 70-30 religious.

Yep, so your argument that religious people are all the evil just failed.

Hope your pizza is tasty. :)

  7. So if a religion has to be moral, it might be the case that the only truly religious people are atheists?

Or are you saying that there is no objective standard for morality? Your opinion of morality is that any time a person acts upon their philosophy, they're being religious and thus moral, regardless if their beliefs happen to be correct? Even if their philosophy is in the realm of a Satanic cult and they cut people's heads off...they're still technically being moral? It seems that anything you do, then, is moral, so that there's really no point in distinguishing any act at all as being a moral act. They're all moral acts. Everyone has a philosophy, everyone acts on it, and really it's impossible to do anything that contradicts one's own personal philosophy.

i haven't been following this thread, but i am completely mystified by its title.

in what way is it a loss of freedom not to be told to tell yourself the same lie that most people you know tell themselves?

    http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/indiana-defines-stupidity-as-religion
INDIANAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report)—In a history-making decision, Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana has signed into law a bill that officially recognizes stupidity as a religion.
Pence said that he hoped the law would protect millions of state residents “who, like me, have been practicing this religion passionately for years.”
The bill would grant politicians like Pence the right to observe their faith freely, even if their practice of stupidity costs the state billions of dollars.
While Pence’s action drew the praise of stupid people across America, former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer was not among them.
“Even I wasn’t dumb enough to sign a bill like that,” she said."

until you trip, stumble and fall flat on your nose because the universe works a different way, and everyone you know wishes you would go away and kill yourself if you don't pretend the same things that don't work that they do. and one or two of them might do more about then wish.

i also like the one about the legislation protecting the religion of being stupid, although i don't recall anything about the person being mentioned, which i guess makes the joke, except that i don't usually try to keep track of personalities like that.

i can tell you two things it isn't going to do. one: it isn't going to go away. and two: it isn't going to give a rat what you, i, or anyone else, choose to believe or not.

there's kindof a pretty good chance that if you go around holding your eyes tightly closed, that sooner or later you will smack yourself into something.
but that's not my problem. by all means feel free to do so to your heart's content.

actually it is in no way hostile or negative, but it DOES have teeth. it is precisely its neutrality, that those who demand everyone pretend the same things as themselves, are always bumping up against and beating their head into.

You would do well to actually read what I wrote if you intend to respond to it. Then your post would actually be a response. In this case you quoted me and then posted something unrelated. Doesn't do much to move the conversation along.

Also I wonder if you even read that definition, because it is actually a hilarious admission that religious thought is irrational. I do not think that all religious thought is irrational, but that is exactly what that definition says.
