In rural areas fences are for the containment of livestock. In urban areas it would seem to me that fences exist because of some peoples’ lack of virtuosity. Over the years as I have become less idealistic and more pragmatic, the fences on house block have become higher and more opaque. I am on a corner block. For a while I had a loopy plastic covered wire fence along the south side that adjoins a lane way. People would jump over the fence and contort it and pinch stuff out my backyard. It now has a 1.8m high corrugated iron fence, this being the maximum height allowed without a building permit. The north side where there is a block of six flats also now has a 1.8m high corrugated iron fence. It used to much lower. It also has two mirrors on the as well as two mirrors on the inside walls because of over the years, all the trouble I have had with neighbours has been with riff-raff in those flats . For some years now it has been a case of I don’t know or care who is on those flats. I have seen cases adjoining properties in town and out of town where there is no dividing fence. It is great if you can get on with your neighbour like that.
I am fenced on three sides one side was put up to keep the neighbours kids off our stuff (the parents thought my yard was a playground) the other side was put up because that neighbour insisted on shovelling the snow out of his driveway and placing it on my driveway at the back was built just to mark the property when a new subdivision was being built btw none of the neighbours kicked in a penny or helped build any of it and night vision security cams are slated to go up before winter If i was rural id have a fence across the front too....and a gated entrance...where i am now the city wont allow it
I have always put up a fence as I have always had dogs and they need a secure place to be able to be out and play. When the kid were younger it was also a big issue as they had their jungle gym in the yard and I knew they were safe. I only ever had one neighbour who was odd and I was thankful for that fence. They would sort of snoop on everyone so the fence made it a little harder. The barking dogs also probably discouraged them a little a well as if they came near the fence my three would yip. My property in the country has two acres fully fenced around the house, pool and garage, the rest though does not.
I don't have a fence but there is a thick tree line between my house and my neighbors. There is a small neighborhood behind my house and there isn't a fence so I basically share a backyard with someone. I would love a fence or some kind of tall shrubbery there to act as a natural fence. I don't really like my neighbors being in my business so I'm a big fan of fences.
Down at the pawn shop!!! All my neighbors have fences except the ones bordering my property. I do have a small fenced in area but its around the septic tank only. I plan on building a small one to fence in the hot tub. I would fence the whole yard but it isnt worth the money it would cost...i have no problems with my neighbors.
Multiple rolls of razor wire, 550 VAC charged, with VR22 landmines underneath. If that doesn't keep the local kids from using my front yard as a ballfield, nothing will!
Good idea. Griffith is the local regional city to where I live has covenants on certain residential areas not being allowed front fences. I consider this idealism triumphing over pragmatism. With no front fence you encourage prowlers, thieves and dogs to leave their calling card. We need urban fences for the same reason as communism did not work, peoples' lack of virtuosity.
