I'm pretty sure that a shaman can be either male or female...but true shamans all have one thing in common....they are called to the role of shaman. Through dreams and witnessing signs. Our civilization is economically and technologically much different from many cultures where shamanism is openly practiced, but it's a theory that the shamanistic types become the schizophrenics of modern society. People who really should be in positions of power to guide the tribe are instead hospitalized or otherwise oppressed and marginalized...this society does not take care of it's shamans.

Shamanism is a true balance of feminine and masculine energy. Therefore it has been very common in the past and present that women were healers, as well as men, in touch with their femininity or who would consult female "advice" and those unindentified through either male or female as a gender.

Intuition is a feminine principle, but providing a space for healing is a masculine principle.
