Three people in Michigan (doctors no less!) are believed to be the first charged with the crime of performing female genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, on girls as young as six years old. Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, 53, and his wife, Farida Attar, 50, are accused of allowing Dr. Jumana Nagarwala to perform female genital mutilation (FGM) procedures on girls between 6 and 8 years old at the couple's medical clinic in Livonia, Mich. Furthermore, Farida Attar is accused of helping Nagarwala with the procedures. http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/national/female-genital-mutilation-michigan-charges-believed-to-be-unprecedented I doubt many Americans are aware of this barbaric procedure. I first learned of it while reading Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel (which I recommend that you read.) I defer to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation I gather this has been an issue in Europe for some time because of the high number of refugees from Africa and the middle east; hopefully FGM doesn't become a big problem for the US and Canada as well.
Well I'm surprised you missed it Dice, but here, a thread that covered the subject.. https://www.hipforums.com/forum/topic/480827-because-i-am-a-girl/
Circumcision is performed on male Jewish and muslim boys too. Shouldn't criticism be directed at this as well !
Yes. It isnt the same, men who are circumcised grow up to lead healthy sex lives. The point of FGM is to ensure women who have had it done will never be fully functional sexual beings. But yes, we have threads about male circumcision as well or you could start a new one to criticize the practice.
Okay, I get it. It's true that circumcised men have a lesser chance of getting contagious diseases. My uncle who is a doctor circumcised his baby son on grounds of hygiene, though there is no religious practice as such in his religion. But it seems to be a different issue for women who does not have much similar advantages to speak of about circumcision, to endorse the practice. It seems to be a painful procedure as well, Supermodel Waris Dirie had campaigned against the practice as it had a high fatality rate as well in her native Africa.
This isn't about circumcision. This is about cutting off the female genital apparatus. Also, I think it's painful to try and know what it must feel like to be that girl. So tragically sad.
No I know why these doctors haven't been crucified as sexists
I knew there would be someone. Cutting off a bit of foreskin isnt the same as cutting off the bits that make you orgasm. Imagine if male circumcision involved cutting off the head of the penis, so the dude was free to live a life free of urges. Do you think there would be any guy, anywhere in the world, even these nutty islamic fundamentalists that would be then pro circumcision?
These practices are not there in the religion I was born to, hence I was curious about both sides and wanted to gain info on it. From what I have understood till now, male circumcision is something of a good thing while the female version is not and ought to be banned for the physical and psychological issues it causes.
it doesn't take away sexual pleasure and it isn't performed with a non-sterile instrument without anesthetic - it's generally done shortly after birth,. Most of my generation had it done and it's the norm in straight and gay porn.
