I doubt the government would resort to violence to subdue a group of people claiming independance. It seems to me they would stop "trade" between the two "nations" making it hard to survive on your land. I'd like to take part in it though, if there were enough people who wanted to do it. Just to see what would happen (for shits and giggles).

Scudrehab....what is this Dearborn that you say have already done this?

Don't have much faith in our government do you? It's called tax evasion, and thousands of people are arrested for it every year. If you resist arrest, then you will be taken into custody by force.

Very simple matter, you no pay property (as well as income and other) taxes = you go to jail. Claim independence all you want. The IRS will say, "That's nice. Where's our money?"

The United States is fine. Sure, the gov't is crooked, but since when hasn't it been?

I really don't think there's anywhere you can go that'd be much of an improvement. I don't think you'd do better than break even.

Uh, you do have representation, assuming you are a citizen and not a felon. It's called Congress.

By chance did you vote in the recent election?

Yep, I was fed up with my life in the USA, that's why I left! But, I can't say I'm "fed up" with America. Actually I AM, I am fed up with what they're doing to the WORLD. Iraq, Afghanistan, elsewhere. But, whether I am in the US or not, it makes me sick to see. Actually, I have more understanding of just how f*cked up the war in Iraq is, now that I'm living in a Muslim-majority place. But the war in Iraq, etc doesn't effect me personally. (meaning, none of my relatives are fighting there, I am not in personal danger, my house hasn't been bombed, etc.)

I left the US because I wasn't happy with my OWN life there, I can't blame that on Bush or my country. I saw my prospects were better elsewhere, for the time being. I do plan to return to the US in a few years, though. Buying 20 acres of land in the middle of nowhere and all that. But I see my dreams slower changing. Might end up settling outside of the US for good.

What about the District of Columbia? Last I checked there are half a million taxpaying citizens living there with no voting representative in congress.

As to the topic of the thread, a nice place to move imo would be Papua New Guinea. A lot of unexplored land and a lot of traditional tribes there.

Interesting thread, as an australian i am ashamed of my country's alliance with usa and feel anger at america destroying countries, bombing and killing their citizens.Iraq had no weapons and did not attack America, it just has oil! Freedom and justice is for all, Not just americans.

I'm fairly young, and I've sen the world that america's forming. I'd think of leaving, but I'd rather just find some secluded spot, assuming there are any left, and live out my life in relative peace. Best believe, if there is a way to leave the country for free, or by working with my own hands, I'd love to hear it.

Haha congress, what power do they have know, and even so, congress is made up of people old before I was born, and besides, they live in areas secluded from your run of the mill neighborhood, and are incapable of relating to the common person. Aristocrasts I'd say

Reading some of this is amazing. And so many people want to move to the US. Meantime the American government wants to turn the rest of the world into the Greater States of America it would seem.

Now where I live we have a young devolved parliament and people power is on the rise. Green issues are taken seriously and sustainability too. I love living here and having lived in various places around the globe, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

So how about this for a solution....for a short period of time all governments around the world withhold all immigration requirements general free for all - all those who want to move put up their hands and go!! The result would be fascinating!!

At the end of the day the grass is always greener - until you actually get there.

I am so sick of the US! I'm trying to understand why a country with such good intentions became such a mess. There is nothing good and sweet about this country America went from being a good natured virgin to a bad temperted prejudice whore.

Interesting way to put it. Remember that the country was initially settled by religious fanatics who were kicked out of England. The flip side of freedom of religion meant that any lunatic could start one. It's no coincidence that the Jehovas Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Southern Baptists, Mormons, tele-evangelists and Scientology all have their origins in the U.S. of A!

I think America was pretty much always a mess. It expanded through genocide of the Native populations, both by accident (disease) and design (forced removal). Despite the nice words in the constitution, the founding fathers had slaves. It took a devastating civil war to end slavery in 1864, and even then, blacks were disenfranchised until the 1960's.

The US has committed horrible crimes abroad from the mid-19th century until the present day.

And I've never seen more hatred of homosexuals except in places like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Uganda. Which takes us back to the religious origins question. Americans have just never got over their Puritan dislike of any question that relates to sexuality. Which is why civilians can be tortured and/or slaughtered by American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and Americans just yawn, but if Janet Jackson flashes her God-given nipple on national TV for a millisecond, there's a call for blood.
