150,000 Black Americans came to the United Kingdom as soldiers in World War II out of a total of about a million black Americans who served their country during that war. The United States military was racially segregated, with black soldiers overwhelmingly relegated to rear-area (supply, catering) and labor roles.
One out of every four cowboys in the 1880s was Black ....and yet watching Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, the Virginian, Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, Laramie, Cheyenne, The Wild Wild West, Wagon Train, Maverick, High Chaparral, The Big Valley, Wanted: Dead of Alive, and Alias Smith and Jones, they were as common as the Do Do Bird - With a few exceptions such as Rosey Grier who was a regular on Daniel Boone and other black actors who guest stars for one episode then made a quick exit.
