Dick. My all time favourite. Asimov, Bester, Vonnegut. I love many sci fi books, but if I love one from the author, doesn't mean I like his other works. *shrugs* Not really a fan of Adams, though I read most (if not all) of his works. Overrated imo. Bradbury was too poetic for me, but I tried rereading him, and I like some of his novels.
So few mention Iain M Banks . The Culture novels are epic . I am greatly saddened by his recent untimely death .
For me, it's P.K.Dick for his introspective paranoid characters and their philosophies with a very imaginative settings and A.C.Clarke for his hard sci-fi take. He makes things not only logical, but he's the best evader of plot holes or dumb reactions of characters. Truly a realist in his approach. I've read Rendezvous with Rama recently and it's slow, precisely woven story was great. I've liked O.S.Card's Ender's game too. It was a very different take on sci-fi too. But I haven't read any of his other books, so I don't wanna judge him by a single book.
Have to agree fully with that. The Dune books are really my all time sci-fi favorites. Ursula K. LeGuin also wrote a couple of goodies - 'City of Illusions' and 'The Left Hand of Darkness'. The second one was probably inspired by Dune, and has a kind of reverse situation - a planet where it's permanent winter. Philip k. Dick is another I like a lot.
I follow this 2 authors for sci fic movie. Aurora- Book Kim Stanley Robinson Seveneve - Book Neal Stephenson
I must read his work. The two best stories in "Love Death and Robots" were his, so he must be a great author.
I can really recommend Peter F Hamilton. The reality dysfunction is superb (last book misses a little) and some of his other titles are very good. I have always loved old sci fi from the 40s and 50s particularly the time travel ones. Obviously Asimov, Dick, Heinlein, Herbert go without saying. So many over the years
