Yeah, I'd second that. I'd include people like Gary Gigax, Steve Ditko, Stan Lee, Gene Rodeberry, Jack Kirby and Rod Serling alongside more traditional Greats like Hemmingway and Steinbeck etc. Although your obsession with the idea of "The great American novel" is a bit odd. You're a country made up of immigrants from all corners of the globe, that always means cultural innovation and creative outpourings.
Music. There are tons of great bands and groups from the US but on top of that, it's pretty much a destination for most bands to try and play, so we even get a lot of the best bands and groups from other countries as well to play shows and festivals here. I want to say Food too, but I haven't travelled enough to definitively say that. Kind of the same deal with music though, tons of different types of food.
Sports. I find all American sports to be extremely geared toward the audience. Most of the world frowns upon and or laughs at American sports but I think they're great. They're colorful, they're brutal, they're passionate. And it's almost like, you gotta be 100% every play, every game all the time. I like making comparisons. See the rest of the world plays Cricket. Cricket, boys run on the field dressed in white for 5 days. block. block. block. block. wide. block, leave. x5 days. wheras America has baseball. You wanna earn points you gotta hit that ball as hard as you can. Now what am I paying money to watch? Buncha guys that won't hit a ball, or a buncha guys that will hit a ball? Pretty simple, And the uniforms are always shiny and there's cheerleaders at the football and there's fireworks and this sporting culture! The rest of the world race these cars that go left and right. They rarely pass and the politics within teams even discourage you from making a pass and literally stop you from "racing". America. No, they'll turn left but those cars are going to be going as fast a possible and they don't drive real well. The result? Fast, close racing with huge accidents. What am I paying money to watch? Buncha guys who won't pass? or buncha guys that will because 2nd place does not earn a trophy like the other buncha guys? You pay the money for football sure, but you pay pay for soccer too. What am I going to pay for? Buncha guys kicking a ball around falling over injured by a blade of grass for 90mins? or do I want to watch buncha guys knock the hell outta one another with the cheerleaders and the tailgate parties and the women? No brainer. Hockey. Am I gone pay money to watch a buncha skirts run around on the turf, or, buncha guys skating around on ice smashing each other and allowed to fight??
Asides cockraches. But can they survive a nuclear winter? Ain't no moonshine when the sky turns black
I spent three weeks down south ways.. Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Carolinas, Tennessee, Texas.. The most rednecks I saw were at the NASCAR race in Martinsville Virginia. They were real like, inbred type though. They looked it too, bung legs, couldn't walk.. it was sad. The rednecks portrayed on tv are like 5 star in comparison yet, other than being haggled by a carnie, i thought they were all honest nice people.
Wouldnt be surprised. They know how to hunt and live in the woods. Like the old Hank Williams Jr song says "a country boy can survive"
I live in a pretty diverse city, there are a lot of people from other parts of the country as well as other countries, as well as southerners and rednecks, but the rednecks are normal enough..just the usual god, guns, and country crowd and perfectly pleasant to look at But i have seen these inbred people you speak of lol, when i was a kid my mom and I would take us every year to a fair only about 40 miles from where i live and the most entertaining part of the fair was how inbred everyone looked. And they all live so close to me and yet i never saw these people except at the fair. And then one year my mom took us to a fair in TN when we were visiting a friend and these people looked way more inbred than the inbred people at my local fair. I always thought it was kind of amazing, i dunno why. And i hope i dont sound mean, i know these people have probably lived hard lives, and i agree they're all honest salt of the earth people...i just thought it was weird you always hear stereotypes about inbred people, and when you actually see them in person they definitely have a very distinct look Fairs are a favorite piece of Americana for me for sure
