McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth. Even though he's a Rock Guy I can make an arguement for Steve Vai. The chords, voicings and progressions in his tunes are very much out of the Jazz Idiom. That and he did a guest shot on Mike Sterns last album. Peace Out, Rev J
Frank Marino, to me, qualifies as a favorite jazz guitarist as well as a favorite guitarist in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_56cgFccCPk"]YouTube - Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Poppy There's also Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny.
Les Paul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA6VP75SjbQ"]YouTube - Les Paul & Mary Ford "How High The Moon"
Well if Ibanez electric guitars or other modern ones built for speed with the low action and all were around in Django's time then who knows Also he used all four fingers for his chord work. Mine would be Django,Wes and Les Paul.
Well to say he used only two fingers is wrong as he used all four. Those two fingers held down notes for chords, therefore all four fingers were being used. That's how I see it anyway.
Actually the way I see it was more like using your ring finger to reinforce your pinky. That said I'm not trying to diminish Django's genius or abilities as a guitarist and a musician. The fact that due to his disability he was among the first to use upper partials (I know I sound like a dentist) and rootless voicings a good 20 to 30 years before Bill Evans made a career out of doing the same thing on the piano. here's a not-well known french guitarist : manu codjia http://www.deezer.com/listen-3455816 (plays with truffaz) http://www.myspace.com/manucodjia/music/songs/jamin-15066542 "jamin' " on his myspace of course pat metheny. Actually I'm really into stuffs like coltrane, dolphy, zorn (by the way : Marc Ribot ) and free jazz stuffs, but I don't know a lot of jazz guitarist freejazz thrills marc ribot : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpDhMR29Syg (he does great stuffs with zorn's masada)
Although better known in Jam Band circles I'd say Jimmy Herring. Just listen to his work with Lenny White, or Jazz is Dead (Featuring T. Lavitz, Billy Cobham, and Alphonzo Johnson), or his solo album Life Boat. Stay Brown, Rev J
