Roots, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, The RZA, Del, Tiesto, De La Soul, Massive Attack. Some more mainstream stuff I like is Black Eyed Peas, and Coldplay. About every member of Wu Tang, RZA just has a special place in my soul.
Anytime you hear someone say hip hop is nothing but talking about guns and hoes ask them for a lyrical example, and they can't come up with anything. They'll say Snoop Dogg or something, but if you ask 'em to name a lyric it'll be clear that they have no idea what they're talking about. Most people who don't like hip hop have a very judgmental attitude towards it, which I consider a socitial reflection on the way black artists are viewed. I'm not saying everyone who doesn't like hip hop is racist or anything, it's not for everyone, but I do think that people who say they hate rap have a pretty shallow view of hip hop, and probably ethnic culture in general.
I don't like most hip hop, there is some I do like but the reasons I don't like most of it are the same as the ones I don't like most popular music it's just not good I like some kanye west stuff, there was this really fat guy whos name I can never remember, he died at like 27, that fucker was amazing, it's just the majority of it is bad
Its aight if it isn't for you or anything. I just think some people have a really shallow view of ethnic art, music, food, whatever. And I see frat boys who say they hate rap when they don't know much about it to be a reflection on that prejudgmental attitude. Kayne West is pretty good.
Also, I've noticed a lotta people who hate rap like Green Day. Am I the only one who's noticed they've made one song in their career? I've never played a Captain Crunch whistle before, but I'm sure if I had 5 minutes...
well its hard to dispute what Big Pimpin, or that stupid P.I.M.P [by 50 cent] are about... but over all, most rap [not so much hip hop, what i personally classify hip hop s is more club/party orientated, like puff daddy and nelly and stuff] has fairly decent/aware lyrical content [Dr. Dre and the NWA, Tupac, Public Enemy etc] the reason i dont particualrily enjoy rap/hip hop though is the usually monotonous beats [and i don't liek bass]...and i just plain don't particualrily like the style of music that it is...although there are some songs i do like [mainly older stuff Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, and MC Hammer for the novelty]
I like Afroman, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Michael Franti & Spearhead if I was going to listen to rap/hip-hop.
i dont understand hip hop. I cant make out what they are singing and when i do it is something like "dont tell me you wont cut your finger off, dont tell me you dont understand." What does that mean?

bob dylan (hence the name), janis, the beatles, grateful dead, phish, ray charles, joan baez, jimi, the doors, the byrds, dave matthews band (the earlier stuff... before they sold out), dispatch, ccr, velvet underground, rolling stones, the who, simon&garfunkel, ben harper, bob marley, bright eyes, cream and clapton, guster, james taylor, led zep, counting crows, woody guthrie, U2, and some others... i don't mind rap or hip-hop as long as it actually has like.... meaning... like the black eyed peas are ok, but any song that's just talkin about some guys rims, bling, or the fact that he has "99 problems and a bitch ain't one" really isn't.... i really don't think anybody is gonna read this list, but it was fun to make, so i guess it was worth it!
