Favourite metal band from the 80's? I have to go with at least three bands; Iron Maiden for their great tunes indeed, just like Diamond Head. Metallica as well, their first 3 albums are just milestones in metal history.

Black Sabbath could also be called heavy metal in the eighties, but however I like Heaven and hell very much, I like their 70's stuff much more and that imo isn't really metal. But it was true the term heavy metal was around in the seventies and were ment for bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led zeppelin etc.

Well, Poison isn't metal either as far as I'm concerned, rather just glamrock. But hey, it's a wide genre with very blurry borders so I'd say metal is in the ear of the beholder... :)

when speaking of 1980s bands we should only consider bands form in the 1980s not carry over from the 1970s. for example Queen is really a 1970s band that was still playing in early 1980s but i would not consider them a 1980 band.

absolutely not true. james hetfield started the idea for metallica in 1979 and the band started recording in 1981, let out there first album in 83. 83=still early 80's

oh ok i never read the whole metallica bios before . in that case it would be a 1980s band. but for example the original Van Halen came about in late 70s and kind of broke up in early 80s "since without david i dont consider them Van Halen"

Key word influenced. But they still were not metal.

    Correct.

Plus, their 1991 self-titled album was a piece of shit, and ...And justice for all is hardly a shadow of their former self compared to against Ride the lightning and Master of puppets, so Metallica were particularly an early to mid-eighties band.

You know, being an asshole by disagreeing with everybody is wonderful, especially if you mean it. *content sigh*

Slayer, for metal in and of itself.
In terms of creativity and importance, Celtic Frost
In terms of what we recognise as 80s hair metal - Bon Jovi, the originator.

Apparently Irongoth has taken the task upon himself to add the comical note here.

(To be honest I wasn't fully aware of the existance of Bon Jovi before 'It's my life'... still, hair 'metal' is so fucking ridiculous it even surpasses some BM bands' corpsepaint fiascoes.)

Well, seeing as I'm planning / wanting to start a low-quality black metal band, I'll keep that name in the back of my head...

Having IRON and LED in their band names does not make them metal. *SIGH* I give up.
