I was thinking as I walked down the street and I saw Young Black Woman with her hair bleached out blonde... I was reminded of the dinka tribe in the sudan, their tradition of having a cow urinate on their heads in order to turn their hair blonde. It dawned on me that this is where it originated. Skip to 22 second to see how it is done, if you want. Dont watch the beginning.. it is a national geographic clip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=snORvgQtc6A Are there any other fashion statements, styles or trends that you know of which originated from customs of other countries? what are they are and where did it come from? The oldest dated tattoo and its origins goes back to a south american Tyrollean Iceman named Otzi 5300 years old. Relatives of Otzi can be found in Austria's Tyrol region today. And the iceman and people in Austria share a genetic mutation that links them to an ancestor that lived 10 000 to 12000 years ago. So I guess we can thank Austrians for tattoos http://www.iceman.it/en/the-iceman/
IIRC, the earliest example of human skin with tattoos on saw the tattoos placed above broken or damaged bones and joints, implying that they were originally believed to have some therapeutic value. I see a lot of people with American traditional tattoos, Japanese traditional tattoos and even tattoos that have been inspired by Russian prison tats. Have you ever looked into russian prison tattoo designs? I used to have a book on them, they really are interesting. A criminals entire life and carreer can be mapped on his or her body essentially in code. The skinhead look (jeans, braces, shaved head, work boots) came from English dock workers imitating West Indian and Caribbean immigrants who they worked alongside, which is also why the skinhead subculture has a fondness for reggae and ska (those who have not been co-opted by nationalist groups). Nothing else leaps to mind that I see a lot. Of course, there are a lot fo teenagers who copy American fashion trends over here.
Are you suggesting that she snuck up on a group of cows that were grazing in some pasture and let them piss all over her hair? Hotwater
Bullshit. It is ridiculous to think that ratchet black women are dying their hair blonde because of anything to do with African tradition or culture. It's purely a hood rat thing that hood rats do because they want to emulate their false idols. It's because of popular culture controlled by white men who want to destroy black people and their African heritage. There is nothing good to say about these ghetto queens who dye their hair 50 different colors or bleach their skin to look more white, because that is what pop culture has brainwashed them to do. That same pop culture is set out to keep black people in a state of perpetual enslavement. I think the idea of black women dying their hair blonde originating with African culture to be patently absurd.
Before I respond to the only one (AUTOPHOBE), who is NOT race baiting, Hotwater and pressed rat, I will just say that many have coloured their hair blonde using urine in history, some specifically did it from only the ruin virgin boys, prepubescent boys. just because the Dinka tribe does it and cuts their hair in a manner and have for a very long time...that was the same as this girl style, I thought maybe She might have been from the Sudan an has influenced the culture here. My city is very multi cultural. People want to connect to a past, I am sure this young woman did not put her head under urine. Lol. There is a documentary about Russian prison tats called "the mark of Cain. ". You might want to check it out? If you have not already. I saw it on youtube. There was another one I saw that went around the world going into different styles and methods. I would like to see it again but I can not remember the name of it. The iceman I mentioned above, I saw a documentary on him as well. His body was tattooed depicting his travels. There is a guy who has replicated every tat on the mans body. Really interesting. Body mod too, you can obviously see where some ideas came from, same with branding or scaring people do. Rituals, rights of passage. Love watching tat documentaries. If you have any to recommend on tattooing, that would be great? Love all forms of art. I really love water colour tats but I don't know how they would hold up over time. Now, just some other examples of fashion and influence I had a doctor not long ago, family physician who dressed hippyish. I commented on his hippy tye dyed shirt and he said, no, it is an authentic Nigerian print shirt. . Older man, Red headed guy with long hair always wore sandles. Great photographer as well as a great GP. Nigerian print shirt. I stood corrected.
I dunno...to me it seems popular culture is more set out to destroy the white race, in several ways. But that is a topic I am not willing to expand on more here, because I don't feel comfortable. Just felt like saying that, carry on yall.
I've always kinda thought this, especially when you look at what the white music execs are trying to pass off as black music nowadays, the most empty, materialistic, idiotic hood rat they can find And i thought the same with the black girl with blonde hair. Black girls have tried to make their hair and skin look more "white" for decades. I'm glad natural hair is coming into fashion with black girls now
You are right about this. They actually want to destroy all races and cultural identities and create one homogenized race.
Voice it!!! Don't be afraid of what some insignificant person in America thinks. come on Piaf! Do it do it do it!
I've never understood why someone with no ties to a foreign culture ends up getting a tattoo of like Chinese writing and symbols and things like that. I haven't gotten any tattoos yet because I'm just so unsure of what I want. Actually I know what I want, but it has to make sense to me. I feel like a lot of tattoos are ill considered and rushed. And what about these people that are like "oh I dunno, I just liked the picture". Seems like wasted space and time and money to me but I'm no one to judge. You want something written on you in foreign text that might or might not say what you think then that's your business I just find it strange. And it's always some outplayed unoriginal piece of writing too, like I dunno, just google popular textual tattoos and you'll know what I'm saying. There's just barely anything original coming out these days and I can't like, herd myself to it. All my tattoo ideas are extremely cultural to me and will mean something to me. Nobody is going to ask me what it means and get a 5 second response, there'll be a whole story behind it and that's the other thing is that it would be completely personalized for me therefore I can't let somebody design my tattoo. That is an absolute no way and not happening. I would draw it myself, and if I can't get something right then I'll allow them to fix it up but as for this "oh I think this would look better here and maybe not that but this shape instead.." No. I'm not following the contours of my body, I'm following what was in my heart when I drew it. That's what is important to me.
I saw the documentary Mark of Cain (it was an extra on the Blu ray of the film "Eastern Promises", which was great), it was really good, but I remember being a bit confused by some aspects of what they were saying which seemed inconsistent. for example, I remember them saying that such-and-such meant you were the boss of bosses and a feared leuitenant in the mob and then also saying that such-and-such meant that you were a prostitute in the prison and basically the lowest of the low, and then later on showing several people who had both tattoos. I had this book on the subject, which I heartily recommend: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Russian-Criminal-Tattoo-Encyclopaedia-Baldaev/dp/0955862078/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485096966&sr=8-1&keywords=russian+prison+tattoos Your man Baldaev has a fairly comprehensive collection. This is a good doc about the history of american traditional tattooing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CS9Fuw7ENg And this about general body modification (not for the faint of heart) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLcLJdrWm84 You probably are already familiar with both, but enjoy if not. My partner just got a watercolour tattoo, so I'll let you know lol. My impression is that the clolour will fade but that the effect will not be diminished by its fading, as it is already blurred with clear ink to achieve the effect, and should fade evenly.
I know what you mean. When my mom died I wanted a tatttoo of a sparrow. When I was young my mom read to me at night, stories by oscar wild. He wrote children's books and had children of his own. Anyways there is a story called the happy prince which really is a touching and sweet story that has a sparrow in it, who helps the happy prince. I read it to my mom as well. . Has meaning for me... I have not gotten that tat yet but I will one day. I just want it to be one I design as well. I have seen some bad tats on people... like why did you get a taco, wearing a sombrero with tasles inside a cross? Of who is this Christian who is a dickhead that you have tattooed on you... and thr guy said me, I lost a bet with my buddy. Lol Really have to think sensibly, what you wanted at 18 ... some band on you... is not something you want on you 20 years later
Hey thanks, I am not familiar with them and watching one now. . There was a guy doing some work for me, he was from Hungary. His entire face was scared in a pattern and I didn't ask him about it because I wondered if he was tortured or was it intentional. I had a feeling it might have been a prison thing, just popped into my head that it meant something. The pattern was odd and not in a pretty pattern, just symmetrical I regret not asking. Let me know about the water colour tat... when I get the sparrow ot will be water colour, I hope?
Aye, I sort of understand when people get kanji or whatever from travelling to that place and having it done by a local, as a memento or whathaveyou, but when it's an artist and a client doing it and neither of them have any cultural ties to that place, and can't translate it without google, then It does strike me as odd.
What my partner has is a combination of watercolour and some bold linework, so the watercolour will fade first, but it compliments the lined pattern. If it was just waterclolour it would be more of an issue, but everything fades over time, and watercolour should hold up better than intricate linework because it doesn't rely on detail.
I wish my skin came in hot press paper or cold press paper so I could control bleeding. I hate it when the lines of tats bleed out. I think the worst tat I have seen was on my first boyfriend. He gave himself a tattoo on his fingers, thinking he was studly or something and it said sex! On his fingers.. he did it when he was 13... which I imagine it was all he though about at that age. Lol. I am sure he has covered it by now.
