https://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/famed-1000-year-old-drive-thru-tree-collapses-after-storm/77966?intcmp=twn_promo_news1"""" ive seen this tree on television, in movies since i was a kid.....its a sad day for trees and tree huggers alike
I read that they cut that tree, the one in Calaveras, to compete with the one in Yosemite. The tunnel was cut into the base of the tree in the 1880's. I don't think that I would have had the heart to do that in the first place.
Tunnels in California and surrounding were a fad in the 1880s, and stopped by the 1940s. Meant to increase tourism. A few are still drive though, most are hikers only. Cool thing about Cabin Tree is that the tree was still alive when it fell.
Should have never been cut in the first place Although i did once come across a random tree tunnel somewhere near Big Sur, CA and thought it was the coolest thing ever at the time. But they cant be good for the health of the tree
