I think what people nowadays need to understand is that being a hippie isn't a fashion trend or a fad; it's a way of life and of looking at the world.

Hippie Atire came from necessity. We didnt have much, just usually what you could carry. In our phychidelic state we were drawn to colors and patterns. We wanted to incoropate it into of statement of dress.

We would find bits and pieces of colored cloth and insert them in the seems of our jeans down the outside and inside from knee to foot. We would make dress and skirts from old scarfs and reminents, some even made them from neckties. When all we could find was solid colors we would tie-dye them.

We often traded clothing in the free stores and with friends. Sometimes we would go to the old army navy store on Haight St and get jeans and boots/shoes/pea coats. Of course the army/navy store is kinda expensive these days.

Yes, OP is obviously a good hippie because while in high school, they are well versed with the lore and trivia of popular culture four to five decades ago. No one who believes in peace could ever NOT know the beatles or janis joplin.

Actually, it was a trend in the sixties. You can have the same outlook as what you would view a hippie outlook and not be a hippie at all. That's probably why a lot of 'fake modern hippies' wish they lived in the sixties, they just would have loved to be in the heyday of this trend but like all trends they come and go. This does not count for the way of life and looking at the world which is of course not limited to hippies at all.

I realized something, you can be a "hippie" until your student loans are in repayment then suddenly all that BS goes out the window.

I was just pointing out that constantly saying "fuck labels" can be a little hypocritical, I think people should say "fuck labeling others and trying to be something different than you are to fit into a label" would be better- more annoying to say, yes, but whatever :p
And yeah, there's probably something on this site for everyone :sunny:

being a hippie isnt what you wear, so if they say they're hippies cause they're wearing peace signs, etc, dont even bother with them cause they'd be too ignorant

^^^^ PHILLLLL. Shit look at the Grateful dead for example. Being a "hippie" is just a word. Phil was the intellect, Jerry was the poor farm boy who loved folk music, Bobby well uhh he's just a rockstar lol

lawl fake modern hippies, fake old hippies, there are fake people all the time. You think all those kids at Woodstock are still living like that today? That free spirit attitude cycles through everyone at some point in their life, and sometimes this comes through with a particularly bad sense of fashion.
