He doesn't teach you to be authentic. He just authentically loves mathematical beauty. All he tries to do is teach that to bored science students (who think calculus is just so they can do their physics)

And maybe if you learn to love the innate beauty, then you can be authentic/

I talked to my dad about the word cool once, and we decided that coolness=authenticity. Usually true coolness occurs when one idiosyncratic individual goes through the process of cooliogenesis.... And that what people usually call 'cool' is actually one level of abstraction away from cool; we call that meta-coolness. Meta-coolness is still cool -- it's still authentic. It's a form of authentic love of the coolness of the coolness progenitor of a specified group -- and in a healthily balanced group of cool people, every individual will be cool and every other individual will inherit some of his certain type of meta-coolness.

After this, there is tertiary coolness. Tertiary coolness is inauthentic and based on cool-envy and is not that cool, but still kind of cool.

Tertiary coolness eventually develops into trendsetting and by then, all the original coolness has been absorbed and a bunch of inauthentic idiots are wearing bob-dylan style raybans, while bob-dylan goes laughing all the way to the cool bank.

Speaking to you from a span of many years, being a hippie in the 60s until now, deep into a psytrance scene where, I swear I'm around a fair number of true hippies, connecting with people I imagine are a lot like you. These are some high times! Yes, nice post. I think there's a lot to learn in the process of becoming - like that it's possible to be authentic.

You can't assume that every "hippie" listens to the same music from one particular era. According to the dictionary a hippie is, I quote, "a person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles." Whether or not somebody is considered a "hippie" has nothing to do with what music they choose to listen to in my opinion...and the dictionary's opinion. :)

I've met plenty of cats now aday who I would consider a hippie even though they don't follow the old life-style mantra at all. I also know a lot of cats who would call me a fake hippie because I'm only 24 and I do. I know this one guy and he is real in to hard modern age rock, loves to wear skulls and crossbones, digs the whole new age rocker thing. At heart though he is a peaceful dude who I can definintly get along with. What it all comes down to is that if you follow stereotypes then you are not being very hip at all. Just learn to look for agreement and you may find what you want.

I can give you a few points of view. The diggers would say that hippies never existed in the first place, it is something purely created from the media. Emmet Grogan actually didn't get too far into the long hair and hippy clothes thing. He was all about blending into a crowd. His thoughts would probably be why wear clothes that say "Cops give me trouble i do drugs". There was pressure on everyone to wear hippy clothes during the summer of love, because anyone else would be looked at as tourist, narc or cop.

My definition of hippy if there is such a thing, is someone who has a passion for something, and can actually be critical about the way things work, or a brain that actually does think about the right way to do something. They are not happy living a life as a cog in a wheel of a system they don't believe in.
