Failbook

Used to have it, hated it, wanted to delete it. Boyfriend set up a new joint account for both of us, still hate it, still want to delete it...he insists on keeping it.

 

I like lots of people but not enough to see everyone's updates on a site where EVERYONE's on posting polished pics and boring nonsense of and about themselves.
It's far more easier to contact the people I like in a more direct way (skype, phone, mail, although I don't really like mailing just to stay in contact either) if I please.

 

So what? I'm not following you. What might they do with this information that would be bad for me? What do we need to be saved from? (Does your drug dealer take credit cards? :leaving: ) I find targeted advertising to be intrusive, but it doesn't hurt me.

I know this could be bad for people who are members of radical political groups, but that isn't me.

If you're right, then every teenager who recently researched illegal drugs to write an assigned paper for health class is going to have their house raided by the DEA. That should keep them busy for a while! Just visualize the mild-mannered dentist, soccer mom, and geeky kid with thick glasses being led away in handcuffs because the boy did a report for school! :rofl:

How many people do you think googled Rush Limbaugh this week? Maybe 20 million? I guarantee you that less than 30% were fans. His fans didn't need to, because they already know everything about him.

Google only knows what you want to learn more about - not what you think about what you found out. It's nothing like Facebook, where you "Like" things and set up favorites. People who want to keep up with what's going on in the world research all kinds of subjects, including things they hate.

That's another factor that makes Facebook especially dangerous. Their mindset doesn't accommodate random curiosity.

I bet if Pressed_Rat made a facebook, he would instantly reconnect with atleast 10 people from his past that he misses, and probably would end up getting laid within the next month. Just sayin.

A huge problem with Facebook is that no matter what you have an opinion on or an interest in, you know somebody in real life who wouldn't like it (as you found out the hard way). A totally noncontroversial Facebook page can't have anything on it except things that everybody already knows about you. Pointless.

I thought of another example of how somebody's web surfing history can be extremely misleading. A local radio station carries a syndicated morning show that uses a lot of obscure terms for perverted, nasty sex acts, just for shock value, and to tease the listeners. Guess who rushes to their computers to look this stuff up? The people who aren't into perv sex! The real pervs already know.

 

never had one, don't think i ever will. it doesn't amount to anything besides more time sitting in front of a computer and finding out what old friends who you don't care about are doing

I have a facebook. I don't really care for it and I pretty much hate everything facebook stands for (the targeted ads really freak me out sometimes too...like, come on. Facebook, you should not know this about me) but I don't know how to delete my page. I've deactivated it several times, but that just seems pointless. All my information is saved.

I do use facebook to keep up with local shows. Sometimes my friends throw parties and events and invite everyone via facebook without ever mentioning it in real life (yes, thats sad), so it certainly helps my social life at times.

I used to use facebook because I'm nosy, but facebook stalking usually made me feel like shit....people can really make their lives look wonderful on facebook, and I would get jealous that my life wasn't as wonderful. Of course, then you run into the person and realizes their life actually sucks.

 

They use it, I got a notice about live performances or something like that.
