Words do matter. That word was put there for a specific reason, and it is used for a specific reason. That reason is offensive to a lot of people.

I believe whole heartedly in freedom of speech and if someone got arrested for using any word, I'd be the first one to oppose it. I don't like the FCC getting dictating the language people use on the air. But what word you use still does matter.

When I tell someone to fuck off, I use the word "fuck" for a reason. It is a strong word that reflects the emotion I'm feeling at the moment. It's probably a different one than I would if I simply told someone to "go away".

The word "faggot" is used as negative word, and thus, it is offensive to a lot of people. They are not wrong to feel that way.
