It's mostly animal and genealogy things, which I'd prefer reach as many people as possible. I don't put my life out there like a lot of people do.

I did get two emails this morning asking for campaign contributions for Hillary Clinton. I responded with asking how they got my email address and that if I weren't dirt poor almost to the point of homelessness the only money I'd contribute to a politician would most certainly NOT be going to her and to please remove me from any further mailings.

Spammers often harvest lots of email addresses, or generate them by word mangling with common domain names. Sometimes they just have to check if the email address is really alive .. if you know what I mean, then they pass the list on to other spammers.

Just got a spam/fraud email, it was from a particular sender, with a different reply address (because the sender was spoofed to make it look legit, and so the reply would go to the con artist). I didn't read too deeply, before deleting it. I didn't scrutinize it real hard or even actually read the entire thing .. I could have gotten the IP address and shit but i dont really give a fuck and it's probably fake too.

I then sent my own email to both recipients from an email address something like 9576CA3CED838CDF321F85A96C3292EE@fuckyou.eu (randomly generated the first part) ... you don't ever want to reply to an email like that with you're real email address (safety reasons, the criminal can obtain certain information from the reply). They can try replying to that email address above, but it won't go through, because it doesn't exist ;)

    Subject: Nice try con man!

Don't fuck with me, we're not all as stupid as you are. You're fraudulent activities have been duly noted.

    Have a nice day.
    Regards,
    ............................

No idea how they got my email address, I'm sure it's because this one is my "professional" address, i.e. first initial, middle initial, last name @ domain (e.g. mcgregory@cingular.net) .. they just have a list of common names or something, and common domain names (there's a relative few common ISPs that most people use, and I only use this one for professional stuff, i.e. not amazon purchases and stuff like that cuz I don't want it to be a spam box). Both addresses will get the message, so if the spoofed one is a legitamate person, company, they will get it also and see that it was also sent to the con mans address ... you see, so now they will be aware of the potential fraud that may involve them.

Fuck that shit ... I'm not stupid. He wanted me to receive some money or something, screw that ... he'd probably steal my bank account, or worse I go to prison for whatever fraud he did!!

    protip:
When you see emails like that .. just send them straight to trash.

I worked for three whole days making calls for a political survey when I first moved to Texas. I was so overwrought by the questions and having to speak to recent widows that I quit. I don't want that heavy karma coming back on me.

Spammers should go straight to hell. Hackers to, unless they're doing something cool and positive. Ransoming people's email accounts back to them isn't cool. Neither is sporn( porn-spam).

Hey now, not all hacker's are bad. Anyone who thinks about the "evil hackers" must remember that the internet, as well as all the tech they love was built by hackers .. I call those things cool and positive :) I agree with the rest of what you said though. A hacker's mentality is simply to take the ordinary and make it into something extraordinary, or something like that.. I hate the way the media portrays "hackers" ... it's because the man fears people who know too much about computers (those people are too hard to control and herd like sheep, and they wish to enslave us with technology we have little understanding of).

    PLUR :)

I used it to keep in touch with far away friends, but eventually deleted because of privacy concerns. Now if I want to keep in touch with anybody, I use email or *gasp* the phone.

I'm going through this thread because yes, FB gives me the creeps too. But as I said in the other thread, I'm using it for some groups right now. I'd be curious of folks current thoughts on this subject. I know things have only gotten worse though, but it's good to be aware, right? Haha idk It's one of the main source of my anxiety-well, it really is a legit reason, right?! It's crazy how, well, it's just crazy, this FB. Nuff said! :p

    alternatives are multiple and diverse.
i prefer those which are genre specific and non-corporate.

social networking is not a thing in my life.
