Just bored and frustrated and a need to vent Not a newbie but also not a IT expert, i learned and still learn by trial and error....... I had a huge pc crash, totall shutdown 5 days ago. Very frustrating, but atm i have time and i already wanted to clean and do a fresh install on my pc. Was a bit scared but flahed my MB,did a fresh install on the Bios and Drivers, looked all good np. After that i discovered i do have a license for win10 but no copy/download. So i looked around on the interwebz and only a isocopy, so i tryed dowloading it on my phone and put it on a data stick, doesnt work no matter what i try( i do need to learn more DOS commands) And only support MS gives is buy win11(cd). Not wanting to give MS more money for broken/addfilled/spying software(wich i already payed for) and knowing they have a tool/download to convert win7 into 10 and me having a copy and licence for 7 i installed that. Me trying to be smart, big mistake(bugs). I wont go into detail but still busy and on 7.............illl fix it. Easy way out is giving my money to MS for 11, but i dont want to,i already payed for 10 and to be honest 7 was the last good thing from MS but not supported anymore by anyone(software/games/ect). Lesson: i need to learn more DOS and switch to linux............but im IT lazy(gardener/landscaper/gamer),i only learn wenn i have to. Ill fix it but any advice is welcome. Mzzls
Thats no help.............i already came to that conclusion myself But biggest issue i have with linux is new games and software(lagging behind support) and wich version of linux(to much to read)????? Mzzls
Due to what I considered to be unnecessary complications with MS I moved to linux when win7 pro approached end of life. It was surprisingly easy to do. From then, because it's so easy, I do a new install every 4-6 months to help ensure the machine is clean. I downloaded the linux iso (ubuntu) though some say Mint is better. (Personal choice I suppose). (I think it was an iso file but whatever, it's available on the ubuntu site). I went to bios to set the USB to run first when booting up. I followed the on-screen prompts and installed it in less than an hour. (most of the time it is doing its own thing and my involvement required about 20mins only). I have a second HDD on which all my files are stored so when I do a re-install, I don't wipe my stuff. The only backup I need to make pre re-install, is that of my browser bookmarks and my ftp site manager (I upload files to a web server). All software for imagery and Open Office and much more, is free and easy to install from the Software Manager. Some of that software may not be as smooth to use as equivalents on MS but it's no biggy for me. Some proprietary software (in my case photographic stuff) isn't compatible with linux so I have a laptop running win10, which doesn't connect to the internet and I use that software on there. That software is no longer made hence not connecting laptop to web because were win10 to upgrade to win11 my photo software may not be compatible with it. I'm no gamer so I can't comment on how linux works in that sphere. my browser of choice is a mix of Firefox and Chrome. The bookmarks autoload to the browser when installing because they are stored on google drive, which makes that bit even easier. I couldn't get Chromium to be so friendly. That's the linux version of Chrome, though Chrome itself works find on ubuntu. What happened that your machine shutdown totally? [edit] use the latest 64 stable version. Not 32. [/edit] hth bazz
Dont know what caused the crash...........mainlly software/memory, blue screen of death, MS my best gues. But my pc ran 2 years without a cleaning(software) I was scared my hardware was broke mb,ram or proccesor but after i installed the new bios/drivers no hardware issues. Putting a pc together easy.............i just hate software..........bugs As a gamer i should just switch back to consoles Mzzls
Wanna help with Linux, just give me the right info/download/path/link.............ill read/learn from there...... Mzzls
Move to a Linux System. Ok, so you've heard that before, but you've also heard how hard Linux is to learn or what I pain it is to maintain. Not so. The first benefit I will mention, because you are a windows user, is that Linux if free to use and upgrade. Plus there is a huge community of coders out there that have created Distros (O/S Distributions) of Linux, specifically targeted at Windows Users who need or want to change, but are afraid to do so. Specifically Linux Mint, as well as Zorin, and others, but Mint would be my suggestion to you. Is designed to look a lot like windows in it's menu and windowing set up. Linux is also virtually virus free, and can be setup to auto update just the way windows does, but in the background do it doesn't stop you from doing what you do. It is rare that Mint needs to reboot after an update. There is a usable and arguably better, alternative to all Windows programs and application. LibreOffice is also free and is capable of using and creating ALL Micorsoft Office (and Office 365) style documents. GIMP (Generic Image Processor) is a really nice replacement for Photoshop. Not to mention there are many apps that are written for Linux as well as Windows and Mac. If you enjoy reading eBooks, Calibre is available on all platforms. Also, for those apps or programs you MUST have from windows, WINE is a windows compatability layer you can use to install windows applications. THey even have a website to let you know if it can be used and if there are any problems with compatibility. The Linux installer is point and click and takes less time than Windows. It guides you through setup, even gives you the option to install the most used applications during setup. Boot up and loading time is also considerably shorter than windows. You really should give it a shot if you are that done with Microsoft. Download Linux Mint 21.2 - Linux Mint
Thanks, ill will have look/try....... anything better then the mainstream software industry keep bringing out broken shit(games, operating systems, ect).................*sigh* As long as my games/music/interwebz entertainment runz. Mzzls
Personally. I do like the Unity Style interface on Ubuntu. If you are adventurous, you can always install a straight Debian system, and install the Gnome Dock to Dash Debian -- Downloading Debian
Games aren't an issue either. as a matter of fact you can run STEAM and DISCORD, natively on any Linux Distro. As to Music, personally I use VLC for all my Video and Audio viewing/listening. I use Audacity for my Audio editing and OpenShot for Video editing (Both Free) Download Discord to Talk, Chat, and Hang Out . Steam Community :: Steam for Linux
*cough* Linux rules, Windoze drools. Now that's out of the way I run Debian but keep a Windoze machine around for easy compatibility with my employer's environment and my particular CAD/CAM program for my CNC. Glancing through your first post, did I read you have a Win7 machine on line? In other words, are you connected to the internet other than with a phone? First, find the Microsoft Media Creation tool. Use that to grab a Win10 image(you said you have a license). Then grab a small little program called Rufus. It can be run as a portable if you don't want to install it. Use Rufus to format your thumb drive and burn the Win10 iso as a bootable image. Set your BIOS to boot from your newly created Win10 thumb drive and install away. There are quite a few other programs that can burn iso images, but Rufus is pretty painless. Then some day when you feel ready, grab a copy of whatever flavor Linux catches your eye and load it up for dual booting. Most flavors make that pretty straightforward. Boot Linux when you want to learn it, Winblows when you need it.
While I am more militant about my feelings toward Windoze, and Microsloth in general. I would like to suggest an alternative to Dual-Booting. It has been my experience that a Dual-Boot system is dangerous and can be unstable. Instead, head over and grab a free copy of VirtualBox by Oracle Systems. You can install it in windows and then gt as many Linux Distros as your system will allow and run them in a virtual environment to see which you like the best. Then just wipe out the Virus known as Windows and move right into a clean Linux System. Downloads – Oracle VM VirtualBox
No argument there. My multi-boot machines all have individual drives for each OS. Not sure if Echtwelniet would want to get into all that My test box runs Rocky Linux with the built-in VMs. This
It's always wroth learning. Especially if you are giong to maintain your own machine and not use overpriced half-baked tech supporters like the Geek Squad. VM's are not that hard to master, and with the latest Distros he wouldn't even really have to worry about learning much in the way of Bash commands. Never used Rocky. what's their VM? VMware or VirutalBox?
It's just a plain vanilla KVM if I remember, that box has been powered off for a bit- I needed to yoink some hardware for another build
Looking around the room here next to me, I'm reminded another inexpensive and really solid way to get away from MicroSlop is Raspberry Pi. Healthy hardware and loads of support. Easy to tinker with and learn Linux. My Pi army currently numbers 7 here and 2 or 3 downstairs.....
1 GPS time server for my network, 1 OpenMediaVault for my 14TB NAS, 2 Plex servers, 1 ADSB feeder, 1 network ad blocker, 1 testing HomeAssistant, 1 just because, 1 supplying cam feeds over the CNC. Pi's are great! Who needs Windoze... My Pi army is going to take over the world! Muwahahaha!
