While there are no guarantees, consider it from a practical standpoint on the implications of being a self-centered destructive life form such as man.

We look at the world around us and the cosmos, from a very self-centered, overly objectivistic, anthropocentric viewpoint, and we therefore assume that any other intelligent life form would do the same. Everything around us is objectified into objects for our own use, pleasure, or profit. If it gets in the way, causes us pain, or works against us, then it is an object to be destroyed. In this way everything is consumed, trashed, or destroyed. Even those things we let live or to be, eventually, directly or indirectly, succumb to one of these forms of destruction---people, places, things, even the very planet we live on. Because this dynamic is so complete and all-encompassing, nothing escapes it, not even ourselves. In other words, this path ultimately leads to total destruction. Either we destroy ourselves militarily, or we poison ourselves by turning the world into a wasteland, or even greed could lead to societal collapse which would be catastrophic considering that modern humans are no longer used to the rugged life of living in nature. The end-conclusion does not consist of a single superpower being able to rise up and survive the destruction of everyone else---it is all eventually suicidal. It should be obvious today that the Will to Power does not equate to survivability.

Is this the only path mankind can choose? Clearly survival depends on being empathetic and respectful to each other, to other life forms, and to the environment and the world around him. These are in fact the traits espoused by indigenous people, who are more subjective in their view on life, and demonstrate high respect for other life forms, the environment, and even for each other. Yes, tribes battled each other, but the dynamics of war were very different. Indigenous tribes do not battle for dominance, territory, or belief. From a civilized standpoint, indigenous battles are fought for very simplistic reasons. But in that simplicity, there is a value for life, the battles are not absolute (meaning they do not fight until one side is destroyed, decimated, or unable to fight again), and while tribes may recognize certain tribes as enemies, there are no wars.

And in terms of being a steward of the environment, science today is rediscovering that indigenous methods of farming and environmental care were in fact very superior to modern methods providing better crop yields and better sustainability of the environment.

It can be demonstrated that the values that have lead to the destructive dynamics at work today arose in the early stages of the development of civilization---such things as a group ethic (which paints the world in terms of in-groups and out-groups), dualism, and a stress on objective reality. Man trasformed from a multiplistic, subjective mentality with a focus on the individual to a dualistic objective mentality with a focus on the group. At the same time we have gone from a world and a cosmos filled with meaning, to one that is meaningless. This presents the modern day problem of why should we care for and take care of a meaningless world? Senseless killing does not make sense in a world filled with meaning. For the sake of suvival, we need to make such a transformation again.

And we may very well be in the process of making that transformation. Consider for example, from our current understanding of science, in order to achieve the ability to explore great distances across the universe, we will need to come to terms with the theories of relativity, and quantum mechanics, and whatever that leads to in a new understanding of the universe. Relativity places a new emphasis on subjective reality. Quantum Mechanics represents a move from a centralized framework (as in the mechanical world of Newtonian Physics) to a decentralized framework. It also has the potential of providing new meaning to the universe.

Any intelligent sentient life form would have to go through the same or a similar process of development. They would evolve on a single planet, develop civilizations, find it necessary to survive its own follies and propensity for destruction and self destruction, and make the same kind of scientific advancements. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that only those beings who have survived themselves and learned to respect life and the cosmos and have found meaning in the universe, would have evolved enough to achieve interstellar travel.

I think you'd have a better chance of winning all the lotteries every week for a year, than there not being extraterrestrials, considering that there are billions of galaxies, and hundreds of billions of solar systems on all of them. The odds of no other "intelligent" life are incalculable. I think that's why it's taken Jesus over two thousand years to get back....There's got to be REAL intelligent life somewhere. It's a long long way to heaven.

Nobody really knows the developmental process this marble has gone through. And just because this marble went through it, doesn't dictate that it's the only way. Other beings might not be carbon based....might not need water, or air....might not communicate through radio signals.....might space travel much faster and without fossil fuels.

But I thought this matter had already been proven as legit. Hell, we even have the Canadian Paul Hellyer's testimony at one of those legit hearings to confirm it.

I think this intense desire to believe aliens exist represents something missing in peoples lives here on Earth. Aren't people in Africa and India alien enough to want to get to know them? I'm not saying there are no extraterrestrials, ancient or otherwise. I'm just offering a different perspective.

One. I've been to Egypt, which is technically Africa, although the culture is somewhat different to what we typically imagine as 'African.'

there is nothing to stop there from being anything we don't know.
we do know there are billions of other suns,
and we now know that most of them have planets,
and of those, even if its a small fraction, there are billions in their primary's 'goldy locks zone'.

so the uniqueness of our earth in harboring life, even sapient life, is highly unlikely.
the odds of getting a chance to hang out and swap lies with someone from another world is something of another matter though,
as distances and that little letter c that represents the relationship between energy and matter make most travel times somewhat greater then our own life times.

there are a few 'nearby' exceptions. on the other paw of course, well there's a whole lot of on the other paws.
an exaustive list would be tl:dr. in short, still, nothing needs to be known to exist.

The fact that he even said such a thing goes to show how much of a ding-a-ling he truly is. I mean, what in the hell could we ever develop (besides nuclear weapons) to combat the technology many have witnessed alien ships to posses? The ships can maneuver out of target range in a blink of an eye. Waste of time and taxpayers money.

Yes it is true, there are other possibilities----I should have wrote "...would probably have to go through..." but I did preface everything by saying that this is not a guaranteed given.

Still, I am not talking about the developmental process of this marble---I am talking about the social evolution of humankind, and we do have a farily good idea of how that took place (even if there are various theories on specific details). Even if we are talking about a silicon-based or other type of life form, the barriers to realistic interstellar space travel are not insignificant, and it is more likely that such a species would have evolved past its own destructive tendencies and survived before developing such achievements.

There are other possibilities too---such as a species that emerged on a planet that is excessively rich in resources and where population density never became an issue, and yet somehow an aggressive group rose to power and was never challenged throughout the history of the planet... But the likelihood is still that any interstellar space traveler is peaceful, compassionate, and caring.

...Besides, of the 4 such species we are aware of, none of them pose any risk to those of us on earth, though one is ranked as a moderate risk because they get sexual satisfaction from administering anal probes. ...WHOOOPS!!! That information was classified. Well, my advice to all of those who have read this, or whose browser got opened to this page, is that when the Men In Black show up, just comply with them...

I'm afraid i would have to disagree just as firmly :p
Those examples and the risk they might pose to us are hypothetical. Nothing is more likely than another hypothetis about intelligent extraterrestrial life at this point. It is just as likely that it would be different than anything we came up with so far.
That the biggest chance is that they will be peaceful and cooperative with us seems to stem from wishful thinking. I really hope you're right if we get such visitors one day, and i love stuff like Star trek that focusses on constructive collaboration with other humanoids.. but i don't see how it is the most likely option in reality.

OK----now you are just trying to downplay the fact that you just read confidential information. But it won't work---the Men In Black will still pay you a visit. ;-)

For the less conspiratorial... this is an interesting interview with Frank Drake.

ABC is reporting that a UFO was sighted by two different airplanes within minutes of each other on Feb. 24 of this year.

  17. ET probably doesn't even need vessels for long distance journeys. Or if they do, I doubt it's a point A to point B system of propulsion. Probably a warp drive. I'm sure they're already here, probably throughout the Solar System. Perhaps they even build ships locally. But mostly I'd say they're so advanced that for most things they don't require transportation vehicles as such.

I definitely believe we aren't alone in the universe but don't really believe many of the UFO sightings. The photos all look very average, or like they could be easily explained some other way.
