I really love that one of the most relatable shows for you as a European is a show about a white trash Midwestern, working class family :D that's wonderful

My favorite female sitcom character is probably Robin from How I Met Your Mother. She was a scotch drinking, cigar smoking, career oriented women who has no problem detaching love from sex and who behaved like a man in a relationship. I love her.

I'm not a huge fan, but yeah, she's alright. Except for the whole still ending up with Ted thing, that was lame.

    I'll take the Munsters....lol

Seriously, I could never get into any sitcoms or drama series......so i don't know any of the people you all mention.....I only like those kinds of shows from the old rerun channels, like Father Knows Best, etc.

Some of the reality shows show some very strange characters.....so I guess they can be considered sitcom if they are not real anyway.

I was watching real Housewives of Orange County the other night and a mother of twin girls....Shannon.....had both girls about 10 years old paint pictures.....for one she is that's nice...when they were done with not much emotion in her voice, and for the other she exclaims I love that!
The one who just got a quick that's nice was upset......and the mother winds up telling her..."It is not about competiton"
Well, Shannon, you made it one, by how you treated her.
The whole scene bothered me......and I liked the painting that just got a that is nice alot better, personally....but I would have treated them both equally if they were my girls, encouraging both in a situation like this was.

Another one I liked was Karen.
    She made that show.
She's kind of an awful human being, but who really wants to watch normal, regular people in sitcoms

    Yeah that one too

But HIMYM was like McDonalds, you could watch every episode cos you knew what you were going to get, but never good enough to be memorable

And yeah, the ending was lame, in real life she would have ended up with an ex hockey player, not whiney undecided Ted

Gloria is definitely an amazing sitcom character!

I much preferred lily. Robin was actually pretty annoying to me. She was a ditz who made poor choices with men repeatedly, masquerading as a strong female character.

Phoebe, in Friends, was a pretty interesting female character. I pretty much only enjoyed the first half of that series, so I don't know what her character is like in latter seasons but she seemed the most independent among the women in that show. She had a passion for art and some eccentric ideas and alternative views, that we're kinda hippie-ish, which seem similar to some stuff I see on here. I liked her aloofness that was every now and then balanced with a biting realism and wisdom.

I know she eventually does a surrogate thing, which I don't know how that may have influenced people's views of her.

Simpsons, Family Guy, Flintstones, The Honeymooners.
It's a worn trope that writers like to use.

    Turn off the programming.

Although a mom (but not the typical mom character) what about Leonard Hoffstadter's mother? :-D

Yeps I agree that character stood out this way. Well put too. Except I don't know what you mean about the surrogate thing?

Hey, we have a working class here too! And we have the same consumer culture in some ways. It was very easy to relate to. Together with how those family relations were (example: intro tune at the diner table). Of course there were little differences that especially as a kid you notice (we have very little houses where the front door gets you right away in the living room for example), and made sure it was not exactly like here. But yeah lots of things are very recognizable. In fact I think such a family and the exact portrayal of it in this show would just be labeled 'working class' here and not the dutch variation of 'white trash'!

Phoebe carried triplets for her brother and his wife.

She was an okay character but I thought they went overboard with the hippy dippy stereotype.

I was hesitant to use the term white trash in terms of Roseanne but I think the writers intentionally wanted to portray them that way. I grew up with basically a carbon copy of their family living down the street from me. They weren't white trash, they were just normal.

Do you make your rounds on these forums to different sections?

Let's see Within the last week I've read that cups are conscious, bats are as intelligent as human beings and humans are the progeny of extra-terrestrials.

Phoebe thinking the spirit of her deceased grandmother resides in her cat and stuff is well on board. :D

    Yes classic

I think both Leonards and Sheldons mums have been underutilized in that show, the funniest episodes have been with either of them
