I get a fair smattering of new age nonsense from the people who come into the cannabis store I work at. Pretty cringe worthy. I have to play along too, pretending that they make even the least bit of sense

What is "shatter"?

I know what oil and weed (sativa and indica) are. I've heard of wax and that is vaped, right?

I may not (most probably won't ever) be around anything but just regular green herbage but I still like to know what all is available and what you do with it.

 

It's a type of consistency found in concentrates extracted with butane and propane and the like. To remove those residual solvents which are used to pull the cannabinoids and terpenes out it is vacuum purged using vacuum ovens and depending on the length of time, the temperature you set the oven to and if you leave it physically undisturbed in there for the whole time a lot of times you get what's known as "shatter". Typically it's a longer purge using a lower temp, so not everyone will do it out here. It's a connoisseur kind of thing. You can be more efficient and churn out more product (thus making more money) using other methods theoretically but the product consistency will be different and of lower quality. However you can also charge a premium for quality shatter so there's definitely different approaches going on and different niches being catered to out here.

That's the Cough Ghost indica shatter right there. Imagine taking a jolly rancher and putting it on a table and whacking it with a hammer. How it would shatter apart into really fine shard-like pieces is very similar to the way shatter handles. You have to be really careful when breaking a piece off to vaporize (or else get it warm before hand so it becomes malleable) or it will shatter once you apply enough pressure, going everywhere and you for sure will lose a bunch of it, as it tends to break apart in a very unrecoverable manner. You quickly learn your own little tricks for pretty pain free handling though and I always just bust a chunk off with the titanium dabber tool while the shatter is inside a container of some sort so the debris is contained for later use.

Also yeah... almost all these concentrates except like straightforward dry sieve hashes and bubble hash are vaped. You can use a pen which are pretty popular these days but most users take a waterpipe made for concentrates with a titanium or quartz "nail" on it with some mechanism around it to allow airflow so you can inhale and use a torch to get it real hot, then touch a "dab" of the concentrate to the nail and it will bubble and vaporize on its surface allowing you to smoke a fat hit of it.

simpler way of explaing shatter is that it is basically the purest form of honey oil...so pure it is no longer runny and in fact will ''shatter'' if you wack it with a spoon
