Why??? Why can't I just have an un-enriched breakfast cereal that I can munch on all day long without thinking about the overtly amount of unneeded nutrients I'm digesting when I eat more than 1 and 1/3 cups of Malt-O-Meal Honey Buzzers?

What are you views on enriched cereal and other 'vitamin enriched' foodstuffs?

Is it really needed? Do you find that enriching food with vitamins that weren't there to begin with to be odd and possibly harmful?

I understand that the daily value of 100% is a bit lower than the amount that's deemed potentially harmful, but still... What happens when I unknowingly eat something that contains a high amount of the same nutrients I ate earlier, pushing me way over the daily recommended value?

I can't even count the times I sat around with a box or one of those giant bags of cereal just munching away at least 4 servings at a time.

What do I make of this?? :D

Not to mention the boatloads of sugar they cram in all the 'good' cereal. SuperValu Marshmallow Stars... why do you hurt me?

You will excrete it in your urine usually. Too much fat soluble vitamins without adequate fat intake could be a problem but I think most things with added vitamins are water soluble.

I think the added vitamins to everything is ridiculous though.

Edit to add....don't eat cereal, pancakes for the win ;)

Most nutrient-enriched cereals (and cereals in general) aren't quite a health food. There are some exceptions, although not for the paleo or other carb-o-phobes among us.

Seems like most "natural" or organic cereals are un-enriched. Maybe start in that aisle :).

The only breakfast cereal worth buying is porridge. The rest are a waste of money,It peeves me to think some families that are on a tight grocery budget are conned into buying breakfast cereal. This money could be spent on real food, The added iron in breakfast cereals is just iron fillings. There are various YouTube clips on the subject. English speaking countries seemed to be less au fait when it comes to food. It is only English speaking countries where breakfast cereal and margarine sales took off. An interesting article about the origins of breakfast cereal.

There's an aisle for that? Maybe 1/8th of a shelf here! And the mark-ups... ridiculous.

Love me some oats. Though I cheat and use the quick oats. I stopped buying the individual pouches in a box years ago. Just make your own instant oats! Add a dash of brown sugar (if you want) berries (all sorts of berries), fruit, syrup, etc etc etc. And you can have as much or as little as you want. Runny or firm texture. Gotta love it. I think I overdo it with the sweets in the morning. And all day long.

handful and a half of blueberries, few cranberries, a tsp of brown sugar, cinnamon, honey. Sure, I'll add some oats. Why not? :D
