If you are a caregiver for an elder, good luck.
I you have any kind of assets, don’t expect help from the government, and don’t expect help from health insurance companies.

They say that you should check on your elderly neighbors.

Here is my situation. Aging myself, but I am 67, and my mom is 102. In mid February she went into the hospital suffering from heart problems. She had been on a blood thinner, but since she is prone to abrasions, they stopped the blood thinner. This resulted in a blood clot on the brain which caused a stroke. They were able to save her, but she does suffer from paralysis in her right hand. After two weeks in the hospital she was transfered to a care facility. She was in the care facility for two weeks, and then came home. My complaint is that she is an invalid, and should have never been released from the care facility. Insurance says they can only pay for so much.

That’s sad. Our elders don’t deserve to be treated that way!!

It's a vast underreported social problem how many elderly senior citizens (I am one) don't have a car because they can't afford the insurance and taxes and maintenance due to low fixed incomes. They own a house they've lived in for 40+ years but can't afford to maintain and repair it also due to low fixed income. The govt acts like everyone on Social Security gets $1200 to $1500 a month but that's only an average - meaning half of all social security recipients get less, some much less. I am aware of a huge number of retired people in my area who have to get by on $600 or so a month. And many are elderly single black women who were not in the work force in the 1960s to 1990s due to raising kids & grandkids, or low income jobs if they had one. Add to all this the cost of Medicare supplement/Part D policies, which many elderly poor simply can't afford yet have just enough assets to not qualify for Medicaid in their state.

LOL oh if only the NHS had got all that money from Brexit - oh but they didn’t did they - instead the brexit government you praised and supported have now turned around and fuck you over.

I feel sympathy for all the people suffering because of you and your fellow leavers - i don’t have sympathy for you - you were warned and you still went ahead and fucking up my country.

Or have you repented and realised the error of your ways?

As i’ve just said somewhere else the thing is that you can have social systems in place (such as universal healthcare for one) to make life good or you can have bad practices that make life shit.

In my opinion the US has to stop thinking in the past and start thinking about the future and what that future can be..

You may laugh but according to the American Medical Association, life expectancy began to slow in the US during the 1980s. By 1998, it had fallen behind the average life expectancy among OECD nations. And by 2011, it had stopped increasing. The problem has been attributed to an increase in mortality among the young and middle-aged.

Life expectancy went up in most industrial nations not just due to advances in medical science but because the political history of the 20th century (in the industrialised nations) has been to one degree or another about the curtailment of the adverse effects of 19th century exploitative capitalism.

People in many nations fought for voting rights, social benefits, safer working conditions, progressive taxation, and decent living wages. The result of that movement was that the economic benefits of production were much more distributed. As a result public money was spent on improving the lives of the majority whose life expectancy began to rise.

It is interesting to note that the fall in life expectancy coincides with the rise of Neolibreal exploitative capitalist ideas (from 1980) in the US and a system based more on profit than social care.

It is very different in the UK. Once an elderly person is placed in a Care home, it is incredibly difficult to get them back to their own home.
However, if they own property, this would have to be sold, to pay for their care. If they have no money, then our State pays the fees.
Care Homes are a very lucrative business, sadly. I have seen so many taken and lots all their savings.

I am so sorry Flagme, it is a very difficult situation for you.
I will keep you and your Mum in my prayers.

Oh God, I just read your message, and I'm extremely sorry. I hope she'll heal soon, but if she doesn't and instead passes away, just know she's in a better place. <3

Just learned that my esteemed Congressional Representative had prostate surgery.
I'm quite sure that he had the finest single-payer and Government subsidized health care that our tax dollars can buy; you know; the evils of "Socialized medicine" he's worked so valiantly to protect us peasants from.

I'm willing to bet he's not among the 530,000 Americans driven to bankruptcy every year by medical bills, either.

Thank you. Not to complain, but I am the only one here. All of my relatives have passed. I have to have neighbors help me get her out of bed.

It kind of works that way here. Because she owns property she does not qualify for Medical.
She would qualify for Medicaid, but as you say the property has to be sold to may for the care. I don’t want to do that because once she passes, the property becomes mine.
