I think meat is important. Does it need to be consumed with every meal? No. But then again I only eat one big meal each day, and it almost always consists of meat of some sort, be it beef, chicken, lamb, turkey or fish. The only complete proteins are animal proteins. Ultimately it boils down to personal choice, but I find meat to be an important part of my diet, given it comes from a clean source. As far as it being necessary... I really think it is for optimal health, since I don't believe humans were designed to be vegetarians, and there has never been any group of people living anywhere on the globe at any time that has sustained solely on a plant-based diet for multiple generations. The whole vegetarian thing ties in with the new age agenda that is being promoted.
You said that the only complete proteins are animal proteins. Are plant based proteins not as good? and really, how many grams of protein are we to consume daily?
No, Asians are thin and live longer according to a survey I saw, as meat is not their main staple. I try not to eat meat too often.....Once in awhile, I do...like a barbecued steak...but then I realized I was really attracted to the A1 sauce rather than the steak itself...LOL Guess I could just eat the sauce.
It has become a custom to have it with every meal indeed. You can if you insist but no, it is not needed at all. We could have an enormous positive impact on our environment by limiting the amount of meat we eat to let's say 3 times a week instead of 7. It all depends on the quality and the kind of meat wether it is also beneficial for your health. I find the environment argument big enough reason though.
Plant proteins are good, but I think animal proteins are more important. As far as daily requirements, it really depends on the person (their weight, age, activity level, etc). Too much protein can be as bad as too little. I personally consume a moderate amount of protein, and believe that most of a person's diet should consist of healthy fats. For me, I try to consume around one gram of protein per lb. of weight, which for me is about 170 grams.
I was vegetarian for six months for ethical reasons, and found it extremely difficult to eat a healthy, performance based diet. I'm well aware there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan athletes, but I don't like to consume soy or large amounts of legumes, dairy, or grains.
Thanks for the response..do you think fish protein is better than beef protein? Although I am kind of sketchy on fish right now cause of Fukushima
I do.....I think fish is just as good with the omega 3's and things, but too much fo that is not good either, due to polluted waters and mercury, etc.
Lol I can relate! The sauce is so good but cooked properly the steak itself will have a very good taste on its own. I think meat is important, but I dont think every meal has to include it. Eggs are also a good source of protein..and fish is great.
You should at least BE ABLE to meet what you eat. If you find it too yucky to see a cow get slaughtered it says enough.
In general the western world eats far more meat than what is required for a healthy diet. I do feel that meat is an important part of maintaining good health. Those who choose not to consume meat must be very diligent in their diet to meet nutritional standards. There are many who do and are healthy. Those who are healthy tend to be very aware of replacement foods and ensure they are eating properly.
I thought of you if you recall as i said I would when I slaughtered some surplus, (in terms of flock management,) roosters for a family holiday meal. Whereas the prospect of killing them to eat them did not lead me to any aversions the reward to effort equation suffered greatly upon completion and from now on living roosters will be traded as I remain the more gentile master of the omelet. Curiously I don't have the same gag reflex over eviscerating fishes.
This really makes no sense. The factory farming industry is enormous and the vast majority of people who consume meat don't care for the source. Companies like MacDonalds, Tyson, etc. are constantly being defended and legally protected by the government, despite their unethical practices. In fact, is very involved in the new age movement and I consequently come in contact with a lot of new age people. Most of them eat meat. Even the so called "enlightened" among us don't care much about the suffering of others. Convenience seems to trump all. Vegetarianism means less money for the government/big business, and I don't think they would want that. Anyhow, meat is overrated and most people I've encountered either sneer at vegetarians, act indifferently, or just seem uninformed. This sums it up pretty well
I think it's a far out dated practice and not necessary at all to eat meat now. I went vegetarian when I was 10 years old and have been vegan for years now. I think eating meat is very barbaric and I can't believe factory farms are even legal. It's disgusting and inhumane.
I had bacon and eggs for breakfast, a bean and cheese burrito for lunch and hamburger for dinner. If I was poor I'm sure I would eat more bean and rice, the benefit of living in a wealthy 1st world country.
Meat is definitely not necessary for every meal. I eat meat but I find it disgusting how much meat our first world society consumes. Meat was a luxury for our ancestors as it took a good bit of energy (a day or two of hunting, at least) to kill an animal that would either be saved and stretched out for a long time or shared with neighbors or an entire village. I think the world's population is too large to continue to support this massive consumption of meat. I'm sure everyone here is aware of the environmental effects of factory farming, along with the ill health effects and a very murky moral grey area. I generally eat a few vegetarian meals a week and a few meals with meat. I strongly believe people can obtain all their nutritional requirements from meat while only eating meat two or three times a week.
