Never knew who sang the song that I posted. Your thread title just reminded me of the line "so long easy rider"
Funny you should mention Easy Rider, I was talking to my 92 year old father the other day by phone and he started telling me about this really weird movie he'd seen after 11 on Turner Classic Movies. Seems there was a tall skinny guy and some motorcycles and they were traveling around and getting into all kinds of trouble. And he told me that they really had a rough time sleeping on the ground and stuff and they finally got shot in the end. And I said, yeah, they were going to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras, and he said yeah. Then I had to explain that Peter Fonda was Henry Fonda's son, he knew who Henry Fonda was, and that he also had a daughter named Jane, who was also in movies. Anyway he liked the movie although he said he never did figure out what was going on. He said the sound track was interesting. I think it's one of the best sound tracks ever.
I remember when I saw Easy Rider. It was the week before my high school graduation in 1970, no school, so me and three of my friends went camping at Ocean City, Maryland. At this time I was a straight-arrow; I had never been stoned or even drunk and I wasn't familiar with Hendrix or the Byrds. We had tickets to a Rare Earth concert, but we never got there because the old station wagon wouldn't start. But on the boardwalk, the theatre was showing Easy Rider. I enjoyed it, but I was quite disturbed by the ending. This was just days after four students were shot and killed by the National Guard at Kent State University. It didn't seem safe to be a hippie. Years later I watched Easy Rider stoned and enjoyed it a lot more.
That's like the time I saw the movie Joe starring Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon in her first movie. It was a very frightening movie at the time. After Peter Boyle saw the audience cheering his violent acts against hippies in the film he refused to appear in another violent movie, this cost him the role of Popeye Doyle in The French Connection. A few weeks before the movie's release a real life murder took place very similar to the movie's plot. The judge in the trial advised the lawyers of both sides to view the movie and excused any jury members who had seen it. http://youtu.be/gKqGh_V86cA
I saw it in Hawaii when it came out. I remember the guy sitting behind me said--"good, alls well that ends well- " when they got shot. I remember Joe also. Nick-nick-swamp!
I saw both Easy Rider and Apocalypse Now when I was 15, I think it was. The soundtrack to Easy Rider is awesome, but I remember thinking Apocalypse Now was a better movie.
Me and a mate sat at the Back of the Cinema with a Joint and a Bottle of wine ( try that these Days ) I enjoyed It Great Film for its Day
There was at least one thread about it in the past. Not sure why it wouldn't come up in search results, probably due to the forum changes. It would indeed be quite unbelievable if there wasn't a thread about this movie on here! I can still picture that shooter in his car/pickup truck, all i can say about him is: excellent casting :-D Hard not to picture that guy as a closeminded redneck. I think I love the part with Nicholson the most.
