I just noticed Bert Jansch isn't in this thread yet. He's one of my favourite folk musicians, especially lately I've been listening a lot of Bert Jansch and the early albums of the Pentangle. John Renbourn is good too, but I appreciate his music most when he's playing with Jansch.
There's some awesome Pentangle stuff on youtube, check this one out, the drum beat is proper phat, it's like a breakbeat: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_q9of8OhkeQ (Travelling Song) http://youtube.com/watch?v=lDhAaoVBVXk (No Love is Sorrow) http://youtube.com/watch?v=9uNn2TDDru0&feature=related (Willy O Winsbury) http://youtube.com/watch?v=7BS7MQdrEG4&feature=related (People on the Highway) http://youtube.com/watch?v=mvxjKg10MXc&feature=related (Reflection, an example of their more jazzy side) http://youtube.com/results?search_query=pentangle&search=Search (loads more on that link!)
Sounds promising, I'll check 'em! My computer can't play youtube movies properly, either the sound or the movie itself sticks all the time..
Ewan McColl did a great album of Robert Burns songs. Yes, the Scottish poet intended many of his poems to be sung. Don't overlook some to the more commercial folkies. PP&M have some great stuff that got no airplay. Google Chad Mitchell Trio Bell Telephone hour and see them with their guitarist, Roger McGuinn. Impressive. i first heard of Hoyt Axton circa 1969 in a Time magazine article stating that he had stopped smoking marijuana after 30 years.
I'd like to add: Roscoe Holcomb Frank Proffitt Jean Ritchie Hobart Smith Pat Sky Len Chandler Regards, T. Clark http://www.myspace.com/tracyfclark
Wow! Thank you soooooo much for this list! Now I have to go scrounging around salvation army and all the music stores! ah, a Quest!! bb Delfynasa
I just "discovered" Kate Wolf this year. She was a wonderful songwriter ... so sad that she passed so young. I think her best song was "Across the Great Divide", which Nanci Griffith did a great version of ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-4aXJliNgo
