http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/jun/19/-sp-death-of-the-american-shopping-mall#comments In America shopping malls are dying. Not so long ago they seemed invincible. In Australia we call the shopping centres and continue to be built. I came across one the other a few weeks ago in a larger country town that so far has not been a roaring success. Well China was still building steam locomotives in the 1980s. I have ambivalent feelings about shopping malls. Yes they are monuments to consumerism, but on the other hand interior wise they usually have some architectural merit.
i think i could make a nice home out of an abandoned mall. they did a pretty good job of it in dawn of the dead.
There is an abdondoned mall, in my town. It is kinda sad, but nearby cities have built bigger and better malls, so people stopped going it. When it was open I probably spent more time skateboarding in the parking lot then inside. On the plus side, its been used as a set in several movies.
Around here, it varies. Out of three big ones in my area, one has become scary, another has been torn down, the third has gone more upscale than ever before. Early US shopping malls tried to be more versatile, offering something for everyone in the family, including food, movies, and other entertainment. The idea was that you could park your car and spend most of the day there. They have evolved into mostly women's clothing, with national chain shit food. I don't think they will ever totally die out everywhere, because so many women want to try on clothes before they buy them. We also like to shop in pairs and comment on the clothes. Downtown areas in the Southeast are making a comeback, thanks to specialty shops, restaurants, and bars.
I used to love hanging out at Metrocenter back in the 80's. Here's a few pics from 80's malls: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/115485/photos-shopping-malls-1980s 'TAPE WORLD', lol.
I live near a ghost mall. was traveling a lot over the weeks and seen plenty too. entire strip malls being leveled in some locations.
Metrocenter saw this coming years ago, I think. They now sport an official carpool area, major city bus hub, and one of the biggest game rooms (two stories)/amusement parks in town. Nearly 40 years there, and still going strong!
The shopping mall in my city opened in 2004 or 2005 and started really going downhill around 2008. So many of the stores that were first there are now gone. Its usually a ghost town there. But.. I work at a store that is connected to a mall in anoter city, and its always really crowded. If i get there around 1 or 2pm to close i have to park like half a mile away from any entrance.
The mall in my town is still going strong. It destroyed the downtown area back when it was built in the 70s but thanks to a visionary Austrian mayor in the 80s who wanted to turn the town into a little European city, it is pretty amazing now. my town used to have 3 malls but the two older of the 3 dwindled out of business in the 90s. One was razed and rebuilt as a strip mall and the other is used as a satellite campus for several different colleges in the area. I spent a lot of time at the mall as a teenager. I can't stand to go now
Well I just saw a vid today claiming that Metrocenter is going downhill now. I haven't been there in almost two years. I'm going to go check it out myself before believing it. Here's a short glimpse of her from 1988: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6xFA5uE-XE
in Columbus ohio the northland mall was torn down a couple of years ago. the city center mall was converted to office space once they opened Polaris pkwy. and tuttle crossing malls the others saw their business dwindle away to nothing
