Really...when you start doing it and realize how much amazing stuff you can find...your opinion changes
I have gotten some really cool stuff from trash cans before. Several of my favorite stuffed animals, AND my Pillsbury Doughboy doll circa 1971! My grandma's neighbors used to throw out their kids' stuff when they got in trouble. Score for us!
I met a guy in reno who picks up all the rusted barbwire around the freeways and such... he constructs these amazing huge horses out of them...I have no idea how he does it, but he makes thousands of dollars...!!!!
...Once, I found these silver/gold stars on wire in a recycling booth at a garbage dump in Sandpoint, ID....I wrapped them around the roof of my car...

Big Lots dumpsters: Hit 'em every day. You'll only score maybe once a week, or less, but whenever they throw stuff away, they throw away a big lot of it. Cases of canned sardines, once. A few cans had been damaged, and undamaged cans got oily outside. Ripped open bags of dog food. Sometimes even tools. Spray paint. Nice clean dumpsters, as they don't carry meat or produce. The best diving I've seen for food is in Warner Robbins, GA. Rockingham NC is also pretty good. I know folks who dry, pickle, or can dumpster produce. In cold weather, dumpster beef out of date that day is fine. Processed meats are OK, as long as you use your head. they don't call those preservatives they're full of "preservatives" for nothing. You can always feed your dog (if you have one) meat that's too scary for you. Haven't yet met a dog that got sick off slightly green sirloin. Wold any of you finicy eaters turn down Hershry's Chocolate Syrup, still sealed, if it came from a dumpster? How about if I put it in your Starbucks coffee, that I dug out of the dumpster? I make coffee with boiling water. That kills lots of germs. I haven't been on a good dive for a year or so. Writing about it's making me jones for the delightful stink of FREE STUFF!
The minimum wage is ridiculously high in my country. I earn so much that comparatively it would probably cost more money to dumpster dive than to head straight to the shop and buy things. But still, I think its a great idea. I used to know a crazy lady that walked around my area with a trolley and find clothes for people, she would drop of totally decent shirts at my house.
