Every time there is a big ruckus over something like this I look for what the other hand is doing. Everyone is talking about this, people are busy with the holidays, nobody is paying attention......what kind of shit is going to happen and be a done deal before the public ever gets a chance to know about it?

LOL i also thought the show was about that until like 5-6 months back when stoned at my good friends house, he is 100% georgia boy, and his dad, his brother, and I are all watching they loved the show, it is about that dudes family, who make the "best" duck whistle, for people to use while hunting. these dudes are really country, and knowing people like that and being from similar area, his comments dont surprise me. I GET why A&E dropped him, they pay them BIG cashola for the show, and that dude is like the face of the show, therefore a face of A&E, qand they dont want peoplet o think they stand for those comments.

really, dude is allowed his opinion but if the people who pay him for his tv show dont like it they dont gotta make his show, and dont gotta pay him. i obviously do not stand by him or his opinion btw, after reading up on it his is pretty ill educated on the matter.

Also, people are fucking retarded if they think it's all because A&E doesn't like what he said. Why would they give a shit when the show is raking in top ratings? No, it's all because the gay lobby in this country has such a stranglehold over free speech.

The guy was asked a question in an interview, and he gave his opinion. Big fucking deal!! I am so sick of people who cry tolerance, yet have no tolerance for other people's opinion, as harmless and utterly ignorant as it might be.

This is why I really despise liberalism and the PC brainwashing that goes along with it.

Pointless isn't the word for it. This country -- THIS WORLD -- is going to hell in a hand basket, and this is what people get riled up about? Wow. The media makes an issue out of NOTHING, and people run with it like it means anything. So some hick said something people don't like. Who cares?

 

Ok, I agree that a&e can air anything they like. However, if only a few corporations control the vast majority of media in the U.S., and they only allow certain views to be expressed, then it's censorship.

I suppose if someone else picks up the show and about the same number of people have access to it, there's no harm done. Otherwise, there is de facto censorship.

A&E hasn't prevented him from expressing his view. They are just ending their contract with him.

 

They didn't prevent him from expressing his views, but aren't they sending the message that there will be repercussions for doing or saying things that fit in certain categories?

during the McCarthy era, communists weren't prevented from being communists, they were just black listed so that they couldn't get jobs. Artists were not allowed to perform on tv or in theaters. Sounds pretty similar to me.

 

The guy was arguing that 'allowing' people to be gay is going to lead to widespread acceptance of bestiality. Basically, he was repeating your typical 'social decay' slippery slope argument used by right-wing populist rednecks and Nazis.

Ordinarily I would just write it off as ignorance that no one would ever possibly take seriously, but unfortunately, a lot of people are really stupid and if they're put in a position where they can rally other stupid people and legitimize their idiocy, then it's bad for everyone.

I'm pretty sure that if stupidity and hate were discouraged instead of defended/celebrated, then society wouldn't be so shitty. But nowadays all you have to do is bring up 'FREEDOM' and suddenly everyone gets soooo upset as if it's unfair that you're trying to take away their right to be a complete fucking idiot.

I'm all for a degree of openness to different perspectives so long as they're intelligent, but you still need to have standards, and if you have to stop and constantly explain to idiots why they're wrong, you're never going to move forward.

 

Not so long ago, if someone said they were gay, or said they for gay rights, or even if it was rumored that they were gay or for gay rights, there is a good chance that they would be fired, especially in high profile positions.

While there is some non-zero danger that someone could try to violently retaliate against the Robertson family, they are probably in much less danger than a gay person would have been in the old days (though that does have quite a bit to do with the fact that they're heavily armed).

However, it seems to me that we have the same kind of social structures today as we did then, only the outsider group has changed.

Fundamentally, it is these structure, rather than the outsider group that it excludes, that is the problem.

So we can trust media corporations to decide which are the bad, dangerous ideas, and what are the good, positive ideas, and they'll handle the censorship for us?

Probably not... but you also can't trust the majority. Ideally, the intellectuals would be in charge-- but overall, it's probably not a problem that has a solution.

 

There is a difference between having a personal opinion and expressing it, and forcing what you believe on other people (and expecting other people to conform to what you believe). Is it that hard of a concept for you to grasp? Obviously it is.

 

Some people are objectively smarter and more capable than others. I don't even know how this is a question.
