Jared for the love of Christ. Paying a lawyer back $1500 or so would be cheaper than a $5,000 fine, or lost time and trouble in jail. If you don't want these hassles, don't smoke dope or get a LOT better at not getting caught. Here's a hint. Have the money for a lawyer before you do this again
sorry dude.. some of my friends have been busted but the school usually doesnt call the cops unless its like the third or so offense in school......... hope things turn around for you.......
i read it all and this is as stupid a situtaion for you as this is a cartoon for germany to show us all: !!!!!
Jared, this is a federal law. Unless IL takes certain pains to put its own stuff in, it should apply to IL.
Ideally, yes, you should get a lawyer. And if you were a rich kid, your parents would get you the best lawyer in Chicago, and you would totally skate, and it would be a day in the park. If you really, really can't do the lawyer thing, then you are going to at least NEED free legal advice, i mentioned an idea earlier. Another idea, more for your own peace of mind than anything, is to go hang out at the municipal court some day, and talk to a few of the "criminals". Try a little eye contact vibe and then maybe a good line to start conversation with someone waiting half the day and is totally bored and wouldn't mind a conversation is "What are you up for?" (Do not say "What are you IN for?"). Tho your charges sound serious, they are basically non-violent charges. Around albuquerque, we have way too many violent thugs to waste a lot of time and jail space on non-violent "criminals", and probably Chicago is even more so. So ask around a bit if you're feeling adventurous and the "cons" will probably chuckle, "Is that all?" They might set you straight on how much you really need a lawyer, or if a public defender is good enough. For once in your life it is probably unfortunate that you don't smoke cigarettes, in can be a real conversation starter, maybe you could bring a pack for kick-downs. Under no circumstances should you plead quilty, especially at the first hearing. But the bottom line is you NEED Local Chicago advice, all us hipforum folks live where the rules are Not the same. Albuquerque: No lawyer, no problem. Texas: No lawyer, Big, Big, problem. At least you're getting the right attitude: " im sorry, i learned my lesson and it will never happen again" Keep repeating that.
