I drive barefoot alot in warm weather. I love it. And unlike being outside, you never have to worry about anyone criticizing you for doing it. After all, who can really see your feet when you have to keep them on the floor to press the pedals?

There's no reason it should be more dangerous, so why would it be illegal? because i can feel the pedal better and have closer control, I drive as well or better barefoot. (and I'm NOT a barefooter)

For some reason people often act outraged that I drive barefoot, but I can't for the life of me tell why. There's nothing wrong or illegal about it at all.

Because it isn't mandatory, and a lot of people have a problem with anybody being different.

driving barefoot gives you superior, finer control over the pedal set and makes very unlikely to push two pedals at the same time without noticing, thing that typically happens with shoes. shoe strings won't get loose and entangled in the pedals or in the gear pedal of your motorcycle (it happened to me once, it is very scary when you need your leg and find it got bent to the footrest) slippers wont slip under the pedals etc. so bare feet rule OK while driving. there were one or two famous race pilots who where known to drive barefoot, too.

Are you thinking of John Cooper and Denny Hulme?

If everyone drove barefoot that whole Audi unintended acceleration debacle wouldn't have happened. There would have been more competition for Toyota and we might not have run away Toyotas which bare feet won't help!

In addition to far superior control and heel and toe shifting, bare feet allow you to sense what is going on with your car mechanically and with the road.

As people embrace barefoot running - they might start to appreciate barefoot driving! Thank God it is legal in all of the states.

I know all about the Toyota thing, but I haven't heard the Audi story. It had something to do with shoes?

Only until the issue comes up on the Republican Party radar. Let's hope they don't think of it.

Unintended acceleration in the late 80s - led to you having to step on the brake to be able to shift out of park (the Toyota thing should lead to a "kill" button). The theory is that Audi pedals were (are?) too close together - easy to confuse with shoes - I doubt a problem with bare feet/driving shoes. Audi sales took a huge hit.

I've always had to do that on every car, I thought. Maybe I feel like I should step on something after learning in a manuel, and the first automatic I drove was like that, I guess... But it would be easier if we all drove real cars :p (also solves the toyota problem)

They didn't have the shift interlock on automatics before the Audi problem. Agree - Toyotas are appliances - not cars - but that is what most people want - as long as they don't have a mind of their own.

I have seen other posts of yours and kow you love real cars also.

To own an Audi or drive barefoot? I believe it is not illegal to drive barefoot in all 50.

Please, look it up before you make any such statements, we're trying hard to stop that myth!

    From http://tafkac.org/legal/driving.barefoot/driving_barefoot.html
    California:
Barefoot Driving: Operation of a motor vehicle by a driver with bare feet is not prohibited.
    &
"I posed you question to the California Highway Patrol, Technical Services Section and was informed California has no specified requirements relating to operation of a motor vehicle and foot wear. A review of the California Vehicle Code failed to disclose a statute or law which prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while barefoot."

I'll kick off my shoes and drive barefoot in the winter even. Once the heat is running that is.
