Yea, that's understandable. Most shelters screen pretty well though, especially when it comes to "Pitbulls". I also would love to raise a Bully from a pup, but I wouldn't mind rescuing one either. Unfortunately I can't do either in my apartment. Most of these dogs that show human aggression do it because they've been abused. As a breed they are saps for anyone on two legs. Would make a terrible guard dog. "Oh, what's up, are you going to pay attention to me? or feeeed me?" It's not always a territory thing... Bullies lack canine social grace. Like a bunch of us here on this forum, they never back down, just ignore all those warning signs from the other doggy to leave them the fuck alone, then it's on! This, combined with a wickedly strong jaw, and their ability to be handled by humans, is what made (and makes I guess) them preferred pit dogs (I fucking hate dog fighting). Before this they were family animals and hunters of wild beasties. Shit, the little rascals had one
If raised right they can still be sociable my cousin has had a few. Any dog will attack if provoked or if they are trained too, but Chows and Rottweilers are more vicious than pitbulls and are more prone to attacking. Also pits get along with other pets if raised with em if not dont bother its the same with most breeds though
Sometimes its just in the Gene, no matter how right you raise the pup. They can still attack another dog without reason. If you ever watch Ceaser, or pittbulls and parolees. They always say it on there. I have done a lot of studies on the breed, because my hubby wanted one. I agree Chows can be a very aggressive dog.
meh... i've been really really down about my dog who died 4 days ago... his name was Willis and he was the best dog ever! i seriously have never had such an emotional attachment to an animal as much i have with Willis. i could only find one picture of him on this computer. Willis is the one on the left. then Paris and Marley. the human is my father =)
posting that pic surprisingly made me feel a little better about the whole thing thanks HDH for making this thread!
I am so sorry skinny, I know the feeling. Me and my hubby lost our dog lily last month, she was like our daughter, since we dont have children. It was the worst feeling in the world, I'm sorry. Really cute dog, and dogs.
Aw, I'm sorry to hear that SkinnyHorse. Willis looked like he was an adorable doggy On an earlier subject: We used to own a Chow Chow and he was the sweetest thing ever. He died of cancer a few years back, but he was always the cutest and nicest dog. He was scared of strangers and would hide from people who tried petting him, but once he got to know you he was the best dog ever. So even "cruel" breed dogs can be sweet and the best family pets ever (I was around 10 when we had the chow. He was even good with kids.)
wrong really wrong anyways, as you mentioned, pitbulls don't socialize well with other dogs sometimes. it's not a personality thing. it's an anatomy issue. pitbulls cannot make as many facial expressions as other dogs b/c of the way their ears sit. so, they may seem to be making an aggressive face, but it may not be the case. i love my pitties. we will have a new pup in a couple of months.
What's wrong exactly? The post where I state my opinion? Or the other one that you didn't quote? I don't know if I buy your theory either dear What about a Bull Terrier's ears makes their face seem aggressive? Doesn't a wagging tail/butt make up for an "aggressive face"? It's easier to blame other people ('s dogs) for misunderstanding than it is to accept your own (dog's) lack of understanding. Either way the potential for fighting (and the power and gameness of Bull Terriers) is why I would never try to leave a Bully at a dog daycare. It's like leaving an autistic kid in a room full of screaming strangers... an Autistic kid with Wolverine's claws *snikity snak.* I wouldn't leave two friendly Bullies home alone without being physically separated, but if I did at least it would be my own dogs at risk and not someone else's. I'm not trying to argue or fight with you, just trying to become a more knowledgeable Fool, But if you want, we can go back to passively (or aggressively) slinging insults at each other.
The statement that bullie owners shouldn't take their dogs to day care is wrong. Well "dear" if you take a minute to type something like "Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with their ears. Unfortunately, the likes of bulldogs and pit bulls only have 10, due to their breeding. Therefore, these dogs easily get misinterpreted by other dogs and often get into fights." several links will come up. It's also easy to generalize and put all individuals into a group, than it is to think for yourself and form an educated opinion. I really don't give a shit about what anyone says about pitties or animals in general.I have been a pittie owner for 10 years now. I have more professional animal medical experience than anyone here, and I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about. And I'm out.
Shes right, anytime we had a dog that we couldn't what we call Read, which means we cant tell there facial expressions, were not allowed in daycare. Which most of them were pits.
i can back up what vig said. also, the pitt/autistic kid analogy is somewhat correct. pitts just have diffferent personalities. they can seem annoying or aggressive to other dogs, when they are really just trying to be friendly or playful. in my experience, it is usually the other dog that attacks the pitt because it misinterprets its intention or views the pitt as a bigger threat than it actually is. that said, pitts typically dont do well in daycare situations and need constant attention. not all pitts, but most purebred pitts.
Sweet, because I never said they shouldn't (I did say that I wouldn't), I said I was surprised that Liz had numerous people bringing their Bullies into daycare because I would hope that most people would realize the potential for problems and have a better arrangement for the safety of their dog as well as everyone else's. I actually googled this whole quote and was at first surprised by how many links surfaced, but then my surprise faded at website titles like "Useless Dogs Trivia and Fun Facts about Canines." Not exactly what I would call a "reliable source." My limited knowledge on "why Bullies get into fights so much" comes straight from the shelter worker who is in charge of the shelter Bullies in Santa Cruz so excuse me if I'm not prepared to throw out the information she gave me... but I would have no problem adding your information to hers. Why can't it be both? Yes, it is easy to generalize, in fact for this particular discussion, generalizations are what we're dealing in. I find the best way to educate my opinion is to ask questions. Unfortunately the answers I get from you are usually not very informative. Now this is what I call an interesting and informative.
