I never put down backcombing. Just said it had visible differences to natural dreads

Actually, if you would read earlier into the thread, you would see my first point was that you can compare backcombed and natural dreads.

That was posted yesterday before we even started our debate

And that was my orignal point which i still defend. Never changed my tune

 

I said easy to compare mature backcombed to mature natural. None of those look very mature

The only real poster I have seen on here that was a visible difference are Natural Philosophy's...and I hate to put him on the spot. But he is true neglect..right down to letting them congo all to hell. Think even some of the naturals are just not so natural. If you manipulate your hair in any way....personally I dont see it as natural.

 

Was all this triggered by soaringeagle's sweeping statement that you could always spot the difference between natural and "non-natural" dreads?

The only reason I said over a year was because in your original post you stated that most backcombed dreads dont last longer than a year. And i'd like scattered leaves to clear up how old they actually are.

One thing I meant to ask, which I'm not really clear about...

Ok, allowing for the fact that, as you can see in soaringeagle's dreads, the decisions you make about how often + how much to rip natural dreads can result in sections which could easily have started as backcombed ones (which weren't made to a strict grid, obviously)...

If you start with 3 or 4 inches of hair, backcombing and maybe even waxing them once or twice...and several years later you have dreadlocks of 3 feet long...what then? What's all that other growth? What would it count as in the context of the photos in this thread?

Crazy textures also don't mean natural by default. If I had to guess based on that I'd say WorldPeace's were natural and soaringeagle's were backcombed and regularly palm-rolled.

I'm a bit puzzled by how the judgements are being made.
