Hi guys. :) I have read this whole thread. *whew*! I have wanted dreads for a good while now, but I'm so overwhelmed by the information out there. I have great respect for you, soaringeagle. Your dreads are rockin'.
I'm caucasian and my hair is a bit thin. I'm anxious to get started-- I just don't know what to do! I want to try to backcomb (only once.) because I like the uniform look, to an extent. I would love some advice for those of you who've done backcombing-- like a step-by-step of what you did when you started them, and when you washed in the beginning. (Nakedtreehugger, I LOVE your locks.) Thanks so much! :cheers2: This forum rocks my socks.

    WELCOME ROCHEAL
well if you wanna go the backcomb route id say look up a viud on youtube but..nly pay attention to the backcombing techniques dont use the wax and all the products they suggest dont leave elastic bands in more then a day or 2
ignore 90% of the vid and just pay attention to the actual backcombing process keep in mind its painful
also can be damaging if your hairs already thin backcombing might pull alot out at the roots
u might want to let your hair go a few weeks (like 6?) and see how it goes if it starts dreading on its own maybe dont bothger backcombing insread just rip and rill em into uniform dreads
you may also want to concider not doing the squar sectioning that looks so fake especialy in the early months instead try lil less strict sectioning u can keep unifoem sizes without the checkerrboard pattern
just take a section oh hair backcomb then move on to the section next to it insread of creating 1 inch squares all over

Hmm... So in that time frame of 6ish weeks, would I just wash with Dr. Bronner's shampoo and let it air dry without brushing? What would you suggest when I go out? I am learning how to knit, should I knit a hat? How often should I wash? Do I palm roll or anything once it dries? How do I wash? Do I rub my scalp like I have done my whole life? Wouldn't that unlock the locks? Sorry, I know!! Too many questions.

wash weekly at leasyt with bronners when its dry wear a wool hat
u dont gotta palm roll or rub or nothin

when u wash just pay attention to the scalp mosrtly wuth fingertips
i like to give it a good shakein out after

when u go out wear a hat or pull it back with a hairband or bandana or something

i iften chop the sleeves off my t shirts when its too hot out and used to always use the cut off sleeves as hair bands to pull em back with

    Yours are straight cylander-like dreads

natty dreads have kinks and unique aspects to them that you don't get when you back comb

mine are straight cylinder- like probably because I have pin straight hair to begin with and I do palm roll which makes them more cylinder like. Each of my locks have unique aspects to them and are each quite beautiful. I have seen plenty of backcombed locks that are unique and lovely as well.

backcombing does not eliminate all kinks and nattyness. as soaring eagle is so fond of saying, when you backcomb, most of it falls out. then it dreads and gets all kinky/loopy crazy.

i backcombed, but are my dreads straight and cylindrical? no. they were before, when i was palmrolling all the time, but i quit that, and i've got lumpy bumpy dreads now.

I always wondered about that - if backcombing ultimately hindered the natural force of the hair.

Hey! I have a question about layering and dreads. I have some layers that have been growing out for some time now. The hair on the top of my head is about 7-8 inches long, and the hair at the bottom of my head is about 8-9 inches long. However, the hair on the bottom looks much longer than the hair on the top. Will my dreads look funny if I do my hair into dreads now, or should I let my hair level out more? I don't want to look like I have a christmas tree, or a pyramid on my head, lol. Would they level out after awhile in dreads or would they always have the layered look? I am planning on back combing, but not using any wax. Thanks for your time and your help.

dreads do crazy things some shrink more then others some loop and lump more then others and even if they all dread pretty evenly 1 2 inch difference in hair length would be less then 1/4 inch fifference in dread length

and cristmastree dreadies intop of your head would look reallyu cool

basicly..u cant go wrong with dreads wether ua start bald with a mohawk a mullet or anything in between as the dreads grow out and fill in they take on a life of theyre own that has nithin to do with how your hair was to start off with
