I've been reading this thread and I couldn't help but add my comments about wax.

I started out as a backcomber with a shit ton of wax in and I waxed weekly from Jan til July. It just wasn't doing anything. My hair didn't even look dreaded that much it was awful. But I have to say with the amount of wax in my hair it was surprisingly easy to get out. Given it did take a few weeks of washing and I dunno maybe it's just me, now i've got absolutely no wax in my hair. So while I do think that it is bad. It wasn't the end of the world. I'd never use it again though.

could it depend on who you buy it from and what brand you buy it from? maybe they change the recipe to be easier to remove.

I washed it once a week for a month then I bleached it. It was after that that I noticed there was no wax in my hair. I mean I'm not going to advise people to bleach their hair to rid of their wax because my hair can pretty much stand anything unlike a lot of people's.

u said it was surprising easy to remove
but failed to say you had to use a harsh chemicalk to remive it
i wouldnt call that surprisingly easy
i'd call it..possible with the use of extreme measures.. ones that could be very dammaging and pooissibly even cause dread breakage

But it was surprisingly easy compared to many other ways. But my hair is extremely strong. And that's why I was saying that I wouldn't recommend it because a lot of people's hair is much more fragile than mine is. Geez It's like I've got mafia dreads.

as far as things which are considered damaging...
this ((((((HOT)))))) guy backcombed and also used a crotchet hook. he's had his dreads 6.5 years or something like that, i think his dreads are awesome. i guess everyone's hair is different as far as what it can handle

    Directly from the website perhaps?

Make sure to dilute it at first and see how it works for you. Many people end up having heavy residue from the bronners.

Wax never leaves the dread. Period.

I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. I did 2 dreadlocks way in the back of my head with wax, and what little hair didn't come out had to be cleaned like hell to get the MINISCULE amount of wax I used, out.

Sorry, but show me ONE dreadlock forum where the people think using wax is good, and I'll show you some people with product to sell. Your friend's success story is less than a percent of all waxing dreadlock experiences. Sorry to say.

Just because you can drive a car with your feet doesn't mean it's a good idea. ...same goes with wax in a dreadlock.

    :iagree:

im another one who used a bit of wax (in my first set) and they were quite alright. in fact, it washed out easily and i couldnt find a trace of it once i cut them.
i use wax in a friends dreads and they are wonderful and clean, no problems. his are getting near 2 years old.
i dont advocate its use b/c people seem to be really stupid about it and its completely unnecessary. but its not that big of a deal. people need to chill and let others do what works for them.

    That's great!

And I stand by what I say:

If anyone is considering dreadlocks they should not use wax.

^ alright but this is not the ONLY source saying wax is bad for dreads
if wax is bad for regular hair why would it be better for dreadlocks?

Exactly. All parties should consider the sources, and the amount of sources saying wax is bad for them, and those that say wax is great.

THEN, all parties should consider who has wax products to sell, and who does not.

THEN, all parties should consider what the older more experienced dreadhead's think.

Here's why I have my opinion:

    ~
    FORUMS:
I've read literally hundreds of pages of threads on the following websites:
    http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/forumdisplay.php?f=209
    http://knottylocks.tk/
    http://dreadlockforums.com
    And more!!!
[I will not post about the tw, or knottyboy forums here]

Literally, I have/will sit down in my free time and read every post on every page. I bookmark them in my browser to know where I left off (the older threads get less hits, and tend to remain buried, making for easier sifting). In all my hours and hours of reading, this is one of the very few threads where I can find a post that says wax is not bad for the hair or dreads. In fact, there's maybe 4 posters out of the 100's of posters present on these boards that say wax is good- at least, what I've read (and I've read quite a bit!) I challenge anyone to show me more than a dozen posters who ACTUALLY RECOMMEND wax. And no, I don't want to hear from anyone at DreadHeadHQ or KnottyBoy websites, because they have a product to sell and will tell you anything so you buy it.

    ~
    OTHER'S EXPERIENCES:
None of the old school dudes, that is, guys and girls with decent and healthy locks, (and most of the rest for that matter) agree that wax is bad news for dreadlocks. Look around. Find me a collection of people who have had dreads for 3, 5, 15 years who have used wax. S#!t, find me any ONE person that has had healthy dreads for more than 4 years that says wax is good. Can you do it? I'll give you a big shiny nickel if you can.

    ~
    THE EVIDENCE:
ALL of the forums have documented various processes for removing wax. Why is that? Why are there crazy-a$$ed procedures required to remove wax from dreads? Why are there so many threads about cutting the hair off that'd been waxed? Why does everyone tell newbs with wax in their hair to cut? None of that is opinion. You can read clearly for yourself on the forums what that I say is true. There are STICKIES FOR WAX REMOVAL TECHNIQUES!!!!!!! Why is that!?!?!?

    ~

    Here's my motivation:

You might ask "What's in it for this guy? Why is he so hard against wax?" Here's why-

I almost made that mistake. I spent 2 long years growing my hair from a [very] short modern day mens hairstyle to having it down to between my shoulder blades. I went through a bunch of crap stages of hair growth. People made fun of my goofy hair and I was often times self-conscious about my appearance when I was growing it out. So, when the time came, I ALMOST put the DreadHeadHQ wax in my hair. In fact, I DID put some of that garbage in there. My GF and I did put in two of those things. We did some in the back to test them to see if we were doing it right. I knew shortly after something was very wrong, and literally pulled the wax out of my hair. What I could not wash out, I pulled out by hand. You see, I have taken the Vow of Nazir- I cannot cut my hair. Well, alternately, I could have broken my vow, or tried to burn the hair off or something, but that's besides the point. I could have lost two years of growth and care for my hair over some stupid product, and I am posting this right now to prevent other people from having to cut. My only motivation is to let people know that wax has some serious side effects when people put it in their hair. It SEEMS to me like most people defending wax in their hair have either used it themselves, or know someone that has, and is defending that standpoint. I have nothing to defend or attack, just honest real world experience, and countless hours of bleary-eyed-staring-at-forums, and sifting through posts. The only reason I would advocate anyone take my advice, is to save them the dozens and dozens of hours sifting through posts like "why won't my hair lock up in 1 second flat" and "I'm at 1 week and my hair wont dread" and literally, there's 1000's of those posts...

I have nothing to gain here. In fact, I have much to lose by wasting my breath, and time. But my loss is your gain- I simply want the best for those who come here seeking knowledge and wish to journey in this life-style.

    ~

    Here's my advice:

To any newb reading this forum: You DO NOT NEED to put wax or any thing else in your hair, not matter what hair/skin type you have.

And that people, is dreadlock truth :sifone:
