mine was salon done. except it was a purely dread place, and i think they did a good job on it! the wax REALLY helps early dreads btw, it keeps the dreads together in the "hair resists dreads" stage.... i got em tightened about 2 weeks ago, and i said i didn't want any wax anymore. the looses hairs were back in about 2 days instead of 2 months as normal. i don't wash mine at all! :B

my dreads are big fat and about 8 months old ish

the wax is only really present for about 3 days, then you just can't feel it. it dry from then on

every time i wash mine, it looks terrible afterwards, and i'm paranoid about it not drying properly and getting mould and mildew caught inside a knot. any tips?

actually, the wax is ALWAYS in there, a user from this board cut off his 6+ month old dreads and cut one in half and there was STILL wax inside it along with a little mold i believe

what kind of wax do u use? and wax is what causes mould in most cases DHHQ wax but knottyboy wax is biodegratible so it breaks down over time.... ant thing with microsilate(sp) wax or white oil or whiete wax in it never breaks down and causes mould

My hair looks like shit after I get it wet, too. Don't worry about it not drying properly.. If it really bothers you, you can always partially or fully blow dry it. I do sometimes, though rarely until it's completely dry, that'd take at least an hour.

i use dax wax. this is really strange. all the authorities i've spoken to up until now have always said that i must use wax. this is the first time it's been put into question (other than by myself, cos i couldn't be bothered)

this is probably because the "authorities" you've been asking, sell wax products(ie. salons that do dreads, knottyboy, dreadheadhq)

i'd never use wax, & my dreads i just let happen, with no effort, no wax, & no backcombing, i've had them 14 years now, theyre past my knees, i wash them at least once aweek, & just let them drip dry which takes 24 hours, never had mould, i sometimes use conditioner, but not often since then it takes over an hour to fully rince it out

wash your damndreads & dont use wax
