What I want to know is: when did "goth" become like this? I remember the original 80's goth scene, and it was never this fucking miserable. Yeah, they did the whole vampire-loving, wear-black-and-hate-your-parents wierdness, but there was something quite tongue-in-cheek about it.

I was never a goth myself, but I know people who were die-hard fans of The Mission, Sisters etc that would follow them around the UK on tour, or were in goth bands themselves, and they just had a fucking good laugh. 20 years later and all of them, without fail, find it hard to identify with the current crop of Marylin Manson wannabes. There was none of this 'slash your wrists in homage to Satan' bollox going on. It was a chance to play dress-up; for boys to wear make-up and frilly blouses, and dye their hair silly colours (which, at a time when the power-dressing yuppie reigned supreme, was as quite radical :p). What the hell happened to this scene? When it it become so damn maudlin?

The strange thing about this whole thread is that, back in the early 90's many of the original 80's goths then went on to dread their hair when the "crusty" scene took off over here (around the same time as Seattle grunge in the US). It was almost like a natural transition, as goth music merged with industrial and grunge, and the rave/acid house scene crossed over. The long, black hair became dreadlocks, and the frilly shirts and leather trousers were swapped for a more Swampy the Tree Protestor ensemble. It's odd how the neo-goth is now seen as such an outsider. Maybe come the turn of the decade they'll favour real dreaded hair too :D

Fuck, I'm really showing my age in this post. Old Granny Hedgy is getting nostalgic :p

    this just in:

stereotypes are generalizations made about a group of people based on a common trend of those people...

white people can't dance or jump
black people love watermelons and fried chicken
    mexicans are lazy
    jews are financially minded

whatever...i love stereotypes...i think they're hilarious...because they are in fact based off of some sort of truth...true, some white people can dance, some blacks hate fried chicken, i've known plenty of hardworking mexicans, and im sure there are homeless jews out there as well...

stereotypes and generalizations are all great for pre-first impression-first impression...

yes i judge people by their looks...anyone saying they dont is lying to some extent...it's impossible not to...however what makes me ok with the fact that i do this is that it's not hard for someone to change that judgement once i actually meet them...

umm...well...i dunno...i dont even know what the argument was about really...i just wanted to offer my views on stereotypes and whatnot...

oh, and i listen to emo music, love it, used to have quite the "emo attitude", grew out of that though (thank god)...and aside from my hair being longer and my bangs usually covering up one eye, i've never fit the "emo look"...girl pants are too tight :p

When was the stereotype that mexicans were lazy? I thought it was black people(the stereotype that is). My stereotype of mexicans is there hard ass workers holding jobs in restaurants or landscaping.

well i've heard that stereotype plenty...though mexicans i guess get more of the "free labor" stereotype now that i think about it...that they'll do anything for any amount of money :p lol

    DEY TOOK OUR JOOOORRRRBBSS!!!

my whole point with the post though was to point out that stereotypes are in fact based on some amount of truth, and can serve a purpose...personally, one kind of person that i absolutely cannot stand is the "gangsta" or "thug"...stereotypically speaking it's a black person wearing clothes that are 5 sizes too large, sounds extremely lazy b/c of the pronunciation of their words, constantly repeats the phrases "know what im sayin" or "namean" (know what i mean?) multiple times in a single sentence...because of this i tend to avoid people who wear clothes that are way too big for them, as they all *usually* have the same characteristics...if i were to talk to one who actually portrayed some level of intelligence you can bet his clothes wouldn't matter anymore

ive heard plenty of lazy mexican shit.
i figure it has something to do with prejudiced working people being threatened by mexican immigrants who have a better work ethic than them.
they often work harder than the average white person, who has to twist that around to make themselves feel better about being lazy.

its not really a "goth" thing
    does anyone know this?
    its a cyber/raver/industrial thing

its about getting dressed up. which i personally think is fun
yeah, i believe that more people should have real dreads
but synths are fun, theyre a style- sure- but they do no harm
and actually they take a fair amount of skill to make and can look pretty badass

honestly i think all the fools parading around $50 peace sign tshirts and spending money on salon-made dreadlocks are worse.

Have any of you seen a hermaphrodite or heard of them? I seen one on a video the other day because I was curious on what it's stuff would look like. If you haven't seen it, you don't want to. It's pretty disgusting, and I seen a guy shove a glass cup up his ass and it break. (random)
