The way I see goths/emo's is this: they really don't fit in any where so they have created their own lil subculture of whining, cutting, listening to crappy music, and hating their life but don't have to balls to go a head a pull the fuckin trigger already. Sounds like a lot of fun to hang around with....geeze!!!! Collectively an ugly bunch of fuckers that make themselves even more hideous and then whin some fucking more because people just dont understand... I dont get it at all....but to each their own! And to the OP..she just looks stupid as fuck!
Perhaps it varies from place to place I don't really hang out with emo/scene kids, but I like most goth people I met. They're very unique and have totally different mindsets
i have had dreads, ive had a hawk, ive been totally bald, i wear different colored extensions now, clip in ones sometimes.... id never wear a full dread wig seriously but i have worn dread falls for photos and what not........ i dont really care either whay what people do or do not do to their hair
This is such an absolutely horrible way to view people. I can understand saying something like this to like minded friends who understand you're just generalizing/stereotyping, but on the Internet? First of all, music is subjective. Period. What you think is crappy isn't the be all end all definition of crappy. These same lines go along with appearance, too. What you think looks crappy is not the ultimate definition of crap. And have you ever actually met a goth? Because from what you've said, it seems like you watch too much television or are simply parrotting what you've heard other people say. Or you know the "wrong" goths. Regardless, the amount of ignorance and hate that comes off of this site astounds me. I'm sure some of you will find this hypocritical coming from me, but I generally try not to generalize () and I honestly think that's why there are so many arguments here. Stop painting everyone with one brush, it's rude and makes you sound uneducated (that was a PSA, not directed soley at you, Callie).
I would just like to say that this thread WAS about a style, so just because someones dresses a certain way doesn't mean that their personalities suit the stereo type. Before i dyed my hair back to brown i could have been considered to look 'goth' but i wasn't depressed, i loved life and everything about, i was social, everything i am now i was than. So i find it ridiculous to make assumptions on a person's personality due to the style they have.
Most times, at least I think, you can get a good idea of a person's personality by their style. I'm sure by most of our styles, you could tell our personalities, likes, dislikes, etc. If I see someone dressed in all black with black hair, pale face, and dark eyeliner, I could probably conclude they like a lot of 80's tunes (the cure, London after midnight, etc)/metal, find the melted wax of red candles in their dark room of their parent's house rather seductive, would loudly proclaim themselves as a non-conformist, dance in stomps, and own at least a few pentagrams (and would love a goat as a pet). Not to say this goes for everyone, but the ones that preach they don't want to be read like a book are typically the easiest to read.
^But that is just a generalization/assumption, you don't know that. I know plenty of people who were nothing like I had thought they'd be * based on first impressions of seeing them* When i dressed all in black my room was just as bright and colorful as it is now,and i listened to the same music * 60's & 70s mostly*. These types of generalizations don't get us anywhere & lead to a closed minded society.
*sorry for the multiple posts* Though i do agree that it is very possible for some of the stereotypical assumptions to be correct. I just do not believe it is fair to jump to conclusions unless you have actually taken the time to get to know a person. People are made up of so many qualities, likes-dislikes, stories etc. it just feel as if we're doing them injustice by clumping them into a category. That is all
I used to work with a girl who looked very gothy and dark and I just assumed she was, and that she liked the same music as me. Then at our work xmas do I was talking to her about music and it turned out she wasn't at all as I'd assumed, and she loves Phil Collins, which she happened to shout out just at the same time as there had been a hush in the restaurant and I lolled Anyways, erm I really didn't have anything useful to add. I do have a question though....over there on the other side of the big old ocean, do you guys use "then" and "than" the opposite way around to how we use them over here?
I think it's hard to not try to characterize someone. I would say just about everyone does it. It's sort of human tendency to try to put everything and anything into a certain group, and once you put it into that group, those certain tendencies and norms with that group are attached to it. It's just what we do. Everything we've ever done, where ever we've been, everything is (usually) put in order and classified. I know when I see someone or meet them, I do it. I put them into that category and sort them out - but I give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll construct a general idea of someone and as I learn them, that idea changes - it's kind of like creating a theory. You start with one generalized idea but you have to learn different instances and work around reality in order to make it true and into law. Now, looking at someone and saying, "This is what they are, this is what they do and this is how they go about doing it". That's something a little different and I don't think I've ever been as strict in determining someones character - but I know there are many people who are and many people who don't care to see how wrong they are.
oh i know, I'm well aware it's just our nature that when we see a person we immediately begin to try and figure them out. I was more so referring to the way callie (& the others, dont remember their names) approached the situation, which is more of what you stated in your last paragraph.
To answer your question, we use the two words the same as you do I believe but sometimes people don't know which to use. "I went to the store, then to my friend's house" "He is taller than I am"
Ok...I was puzzled because chaos had "than" in italics, when I think she meant "then" but I thought that she would've noticed at the point of italicising that it was wrong, which made me think it was perhaps right somehow, following some rule I didn't know about. Fuck I'm boring. Sorry. bleh
If everyone didn't type a story for their opinions I'd take the time to read them, but I read some of what people said about mine, and I really wasn't trying to generalize anyone, I was simply saying the people who do change constantly to be cool shouldn't. I wasn't saying everyone who changes constantly do it to be cool, even though most of them do. But if you dye your hair or w/e monthly or often and don't do it to be cool, just do it to be different, than I don't really mind. I probably shouldn't mind people doing it to be cool either because it's their decision to do it, and who am I to judge? But O well. I'll try harder not to judge next time I guess.
