I've seen a few skirts latley with a flat front and then a drawstring in the back, and I think I figured out that you should just sew half the length into the side seam on both sides and have them come out the back, but would that work?

does anyone know how to do it?

For a flat front, you'd have to sew the drawstring into the side seams... so you'd have a separate string sewn into each side. that way when you pull them in the back, the fabric in the back scrunches up, but the front still stays smooth.
