I've taught black people to swim, both children and adults. But I understand this stereotype as I've heard it my whole life. When I was in boot camp though is when I really saw it in the most obvious terms. The only black guys in my company who could swim were from the Caribbean. The rest sank like rocks, it was bewildering.

Since I had worked for the YMCA I got a cushy gig as a swim instructor for our company. I tried it the Navy way but gave up after being nearly drowned by a shipmate who panicked. Once I could get them used to floating, swimming was easy. Boot camp though is one place where racial shit is fully exposed for how useless it really is. We were a team and no two of us were alike.
