Lather-Jefferson Airplane Lather was thirty years old today, They took away all of his toys. His mother sent newspaper clippings to him, About his old friends who'd stopped being boys. There was Harwitz E. Green, just turned thirty-three, His leather chair waits at the bank. And Seargent Dow Jones, twenty-seven years old, Commanding his very own tank. But Lather still finds it a nice thing to do, To lie about nude in the sand, Drawing pictures of mountains that look like bumps, And thrashing the air with his hands. But wait, oh Lather's productive you know, He produces the finest of sound, Putting drumsticks on either side of his nose, Snorting the best licks in town, But that's all over... Lather was thirty years old today, And Lather came foam from his tongue. He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said, Is it true that I'm no longer young? And the children call him famous, And the old men call him insane, And sometimes he's so nameless, That he hardly knows which game to play... Which words to say... And I should have told him, "No, you're not old." And I should have let him go on...smiling...babywide. i dont think theres anything wrong with getting older, just dont let society force a life onto you. if all you want to do is travel and never have any stuff or live in the alaskan wilderness for 30 years, do it. dont let people tell you what to do or how to live.
Yeah, im in the same boat. I want to move my happy ass to hawaii, and to do that I need a little cash in my pocket. Im going to work for like 3 months and save my money, and I found a place that will hire me, its a major corporation but I need a job, and they want me to cut my hair and I dont want to do that, but I need a job. Atleast for right now. Besides, hair grows back. And "growing up" is all in how you look at it. Cutting your hair is only going to change who you are and how you think if you LET IT. Just stay you, remember what you know, and if you quit yer job grow yer hair back and move on with yer bad self. Wearing a suit and tie, I dont know about all THAT, but the same shit applies. The world can only change you if you let it, and if you stay strong in what you believe then youll be okay. The spirit tends to stay young. Besides, like they say in HArold and Kumar Go To WhiteCastle, "The universe tends to unfold as it should." So dont sweat it, and dont let the money trap you. I find its best to just do whatever pops up in front of you and roll with it. But Im 17, and Im in the exact same boat, so I know where yer coming from. ANd remember, you're never stuck, you can always change yer situation, unless its not part of the cosmic puzzle. Anyway, Im rambling, good luck and stay true to yourself!
Growing up is something you do, but doesnt mean you have to conform. Look at me, 27, successfull corporate career (until Katrina), long nasty dready hair, big nasty beard, living the way I want, free to be me, just be yourself. I was able to be myself in a world of suits and button ups, because they knew thats the only way they'd get me. So fuck em, keep yourself free, but go to college.
Theres a difference between growing up and conforming to standards... dont listen to the people that say "dont goto college".. the more you can educate yourself.. the better.. knowledge is power... just do whatever makes you happy.. i've given up jobs and authoritive positions just to be happy and get paid less.. i was a kitchen manager for awhile.. and i was getting paid GREAT.. but i wasnt happy with the constant 24/7 being on call shit... so i stepped down.. get paid alot less than what i was at being manager.. but im happy.. thats all that matters... like in Bhutan... the people who are the happiest are concidered to be the richest people...
what annoys me is i feel like i havent spent my teen years like i should, i probably have, but soon it will be over and maybe i could have made the most of the time i had :H ...cant live regretting i guess tho!
Don't get a job that requires you to be a corporate whore. You won't have to worry about the hair cutting, as long as you can keep it neat and tied back. You gotta make money somehow, though.
Freedom Like A Shopping Cart by NOFX A christian, an anarchist slash prostitute figures out the true meaning of freedom not freedom like america freedom like a shopping cart kick back no tense you got a bag of grub that cost you about 50 cents no fear no fuckin feat malt liquor tastes much better on the street crustin, a way of life for heroines and heroes who hitch hike the road to eden not eden like the garden state, eden like the state of mind kick back cheap thrills. You'll do anything for a laugh even if it kills you the bridge you took it out the ticket takers suddenly lost count sleeping under rays your teeth crumbling away say goodbye to all responsibility you never wanted it, man wasting time whenever you get the chance which happens to be all the time kick back free meals a couple times a day, you make a couple of shady deals no work no fuckin pay cardboard condominium by the bay you're between the red & black and you're never goin back to all responsibility you never wanted it, man (i might be taking your ideal lifestyle to an extreme, but maybe someone else can find this useful if you don't.) some people can live a life like that and be happy. most people can't. but i know what you mean, man. i don't ever want to give up my freedom and my journey to self-realization for approval and a symbol of fake importance. as long as you're alive and happy, i say you're doing good. and it will definately be hard, but it is possible to live a long and healthy life without sacrificing any part of yourself. just start learning now what you absolutely need to have, what is cheapest, and what you can do to get what you need. for example, an "average" diet is 2,000 calories a day. but you really need much less than that, especially if you take vitamins. so figure out what foods are cheap and will get you around 1,500 calories a day (ramen is always a good one, at 10-20 cents and 400 calories per pack). then find some good multivitamins, get the widest variety you can, since you probably won't be getting protein from steak or calcium from milk . figure out where you'll be getting your water, if you want things like electricity, if you want a gas stove or to cook things over a fire, if you need a heater, etc. then you'll be able to estimate how much your living costs will be per month or per week. the higher the cost, the likelier you'll have to compromise a little more. if you're living on a dollar a day, sure, you can just sit on the sidewalk and play your guitar and know you'll probably be fine . but you should get some kind of "real" job. there are good ones out there, that can be enjoyable even if they don't pay that much. it'll be a constant challenge, but i think security is overrated. when we are faced with challenges is when we grow most. you'll have to be okay with wearing dirty clothes, and be open to change. it's a big decision. there are tons of benefits, but there are tons of sacrifices you'll have to make. being a kiss-ass has it's perks, like retirement and healthcare and t.v. just decide how important your freedom is to you, and if you really think a suit and tie and short hair will be your ball and chain. it's doable, but it's a very different lifestyle than the one you're (probably) living now.
"forever young"........an old utopia.....and utopia forever.... about your hair, as you grow old, it will start to fall....what are you gonna do about it ???
The Eternal Questioner If time could stand still How long life should seem For life is but an illusion A state of concious dream And when life is all but over Time will wait no more Life but just the question Did you see the things you saw And when questions can't be answered Answer is not to gain Was my concious worth the effort And time but stopped in vain. Aleister Crowley
I know plenty of people with great, 'respectable' jobs that have hair past their cracks. Getting a job and growing up doesn't mean you have to change who you are or what you look like. It just means that you're mature and are into taking care of your own business.
