ok, so this pressed my bull shit button and I believe there is probably more to this story than is being told. I've cut my foot, punctured it all while barefoot and haven't had an issues. I bet he got into something he used on his grass or had another health issue something and doesn't want to say it publicly.

    this happened in Houston, Texas

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- West Houston resident Jon Oxley walked outside of his house barefoot in the grass and cut his foot. He said he, "didn't think much of it right away."

Two days later, Oxley's foot turned black with a white border. He became concerned, "It was just like a ohh, oh doggone what was that?"

The 59-year-old went to West Houston Medical Center. Doctors say his kidneys were failing and he needed emergency surgery. Four surgeries later, Oxley lost all of his toes on his right foot. Holding back tears, he said, "That was pretty tough because at the same time as you are losing toes, you are thinking of things in your life you are losing."

Oxley was diagnosed with Strep Pyogenes, a flesh eating bacteria, similar to the bacteria found in strep throat.

Dr. Asia Lo with the West Houston Wound Center described the bacteria as, "the same strep. But it was a more aggressive type." She continued, "The bottom line, when you go outside, don't be barefoot. If you do get a puncture wound, go and see an ankle specialist."

By losing his toes, doctors could clean Oxley's foot out and ultimately save his right leg. Thinking about what has happened to him, Oxley said, "I can make do with that. I've always been pretty resourceful. I'll figure a way to go wade fishing. I'll figure a way to go out there with the kids. There's no doubt about it."

That's very unfortunate. :( I've gone barefoot my entire life though, and nothing has happened to me. I mean, I think there are bigger things to worry about. Use your judgment and just be careful.

I've heard all sorts of stories over the net and some that I read are either ridiculous of totally over exaggerated. I've been barefoot 24/7 for years now and had nothing more that a few scrapes (mostly due to my own stupidity). Sure there are hazards out there, I just try to be sensible and avoid them or be careful.
I'm certain that there is a scary horror story for every part of the body......we've just gotta do what humans appear to be able to do less and less..risk assess!

Ive had a thick needle of metal in my sole but I dug it out with a pin and covered my heel in sanitiser sat for 5 then kept walking round the whole city. NO PROBLEMS and I have had many skin infections not at all related to barefeet. Since being barefoot I have been super healthy. If your a true barefooter you value your feet and just need to treat em with care.

I wonder if he was diabetic, possibly undiagnosed. That might account for it. I've been pulling thorns and stuff out of my soles for years without any problems.

The flesh eating bacteria can destroy anywhere. My mentor has a college friend who lost his arm to it.

Should we all wear leather gloves? I think not.
    Life is risk and reward.
