Who else thinks this is one of the greatest movies ever made? And is probably the deepest as far as stories go, most people don't understand it. I though I did but didn't until I watched the directors cut.

I have the director's cut on my wish list, since I lost my normal copy of the movie. After I saw Donnie Darko, it became my favorite movie, instantly.

Excellent movie, just saw it last night (in a theater, no less). :D I don't think it's all that hard to understand, if you accept the stuff about time travel and branched universes. It helps to know that in physics, branching universes is a possibility. Also a good movie about "growing up", fear of the world, etc..

yeah, it's definatly all about growing up and fear of the world. i actually feel that that is the real point of the movie. all the time travel physics is just a medium to present it. Plus, all the surrealism in the films (with frank, astral planes, etc) is being seen through the eyes of Donnie who's really just a troubled teenager.

Yes, I just picked up the Directors Cut DVD while browsing a very large selection of used videos. Never heard of it, but I've got the hots for Jake Gyllenhaal so I bought it.

Watched it tonight and was blown away. I came here to comment on it and found 4 threads by that film name going back to 2004 with the release of the Directors Cut. So I merged them all - now please don't start new threads of the same movie again. :toetap05:

It is a beautiful indy film - great story and production values considering the low budget. And it was shot in 28 days. I haven't read an explanation for that but it is kinda freaky.

I now have it on my shelf next to The Sixth Sense and so glad I finally got to see it. As indicated by the majority of posts here, the movie is a cult classic on DVD. However, it didn't break even on its theater run. One problem, it was released in September 2001 - other things had everyone's attention.
