Propping up economies with military spending is rather barbaric.

If any other county was to attack Germany , they would be fighting the other NATO countries.

    Counter arguments are:

    1. A major reduction in troops in Germany sends a signal to our allies, Russia and China that we are abandoning our allies.
    2. Ramstein Air Base is a launch site for operations in the Mideast and Africa and is the European headquarters of the U.S. Air force.
    3. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is a major hospital for wounded personal from Iraq and Afghanistan.
    4. Stuttgart is the headquarters the U.S. European Command and the U.S. Africa Command.
    5. Wiesbaden is the headquarters of U.S. Army of Europe.
    6. Spangdahlem is an F-16 fighter base.
    7. The Grafenwoehr Training Area is the largest NATO training facility in Europe.

A major withdraw would result in a loss of a forward base for anti terrorism operations, help for wounded American personal, loss of "on site" command and control for both the Air Force and Army,
Loss of the European and African command headquarters,
Loss of a forward fighter base,
And a crippling of NATO's largest training center.

Cutting military spending when your country is falling apart at the seams does make sense in 2020.
Trump mad it clear from the outset that he preferred an amicable diplomatic relationship with Russia to a pointless standoff.
I agree that no other country would defeat Russia. My question is, why would they want to.?

Lets all calm down and increase tourism and friendship between the everyday people from other parts of the world. Once the people unite, governments will be forced to follow.
We tend to see Russia as some type of monster, but I wonder whether their police killed more than 1,000 of their own citizens last year by shooting them.?
It would also interesting to see how the number of people in prison in Russia compares with the US. We may be quite surprised if we knew the answer to that one

I thought they were there supporting Germany in a security capacity - against whom I haven't a notion. I will read the link, but why were troops there? If they were to serve a security function, that's one thing. If the United States is simply reigning in troops from bases where they aren't needed that's probably ok; though I don't agree with the President doing it at a whim.

It's hard to see past the teachings of my youth.
Russia, we were taught, was not to be trusted.
Even the cartoons pushed the narrative. Remember Boris Badinov and Natasha?

    But
If he wants to cozy up to Russia that's his business, although I find it a bit strange.
But alienating all our allies is something only a fool would do.
Such is the mind of Forrest Trump.

It is a bit of a catch 22 situation. It is ongoing tensions between Russia and the US that drives the military levels in western Europe. An overall drop in military spending would actually benefit us.

I worry more about China than Russia.
While they do not pose a military threat, we are sending them all our money down a one way street. Why would they want to invade, when they already own a large chunk of the US and western Europe.

Trump made it clear that he's Putin's patsy.

Putin has killed politcal foes such as Boris Nemtsov, Boris Berezovsky, Stanislav Markelov, Paul Klebnikov, Anastasia Baburova, Sergei Magnitsky, Natalia Estemirova, Anna Politkovskaya, Alexander Litvinenko, and Sergei Yushenkov.
And Trump has secret meetings with him.

Data on police killings in Russia is unavailable...I wonder why?
Russian facing extremism charges alleges police torture

Russian serial killer policeman found guilty of 56 more murders

Russia interfered with our elections and is doing it again.
    Putin poisons his detractors.
    Russia invaded Ukraine.
Russia shot down Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17.
Russia paid the Taliban to kill U.S. soldiers.
Russia committed war crimes in Idlib.
Russia committed war crimes in Chechnya.
Russia committed war crimes in Georgia.

    Etc.
    Vladimir Putin, war criminal
And you. like Trump, want to be friends with this guy?

    Sad.

The situation is far from simple, but my question is whether all of this happens as a DIRECT result of Putin, or is it something that has gone on since Stalin ruled.

Things need to change, but will diplomacy do more to diffuse the Russian situation when it becomes so obviously pointless.

As I said, a difficult situation.

I see some similarity with the to the events following WW! where the world crippled Germany to a point that more than 90% or the people supported and welcomed Adolf Hitler as their savior.
On top of the military loss of life, he went on to MURDER 21 million innocent citizens.

It is all to easy to allow history to repeat itself. We have to look at the bigger picture and take responsibility for the direction that WE are pushing it towards.
