Doing dreads over spring break, do local stores like wal-mart have wax substitute?

Well years to reach full maturity, but they mature a little every day.

hey, nothing wrong with joking. :)

But somebody might take you seriously and actually use the crap in their hair..so you need to make it clearer that you're joking.

    silly. :p

    Yes, they're metal.

What advantages does the dog comb have?

Ah cool, I am a bit worried that the tongs are too short though =/

Also, what's the best recipe for shampoo/accelerator?

My mom got this extra hold gel, it's the firmest I've ever seen, doesn't move/jiggle at all, how would this work for dreads?

I'm starting tomorrow, what should I do to prepare tonight? How do I get all the residue out before I start?

Closest thing I could find to residue free shampoo was this, is it close enough, at least for just getting hair ready before starting the dreads?

    ABBA Molasses Purifier

    Detoxifying shampoo.

If your hair acts stubborn or limp and refuses to cooperate, build-up could be the problem. ABBA Molasses Purifier's molasses, baking soda and special chelators put hard water minerals, chlorine and other impurities in their place - down the drain. Your hair's condition is renewed. Excellent for swimmers. The finest in clarifying hair care.

I don't know anything about the soap you got...but I would thing molasses would leave a residue given the nature of its consistency, also according to the website that shampoo isn't meant to be used constantly check into that...or you could just get some castile soap like Doc Bronners or a natural soap with as little ingredients as possible, preferably with tea tree, just check out a health food store, nothing with a shitload of chemy's in it. Don't put gel in your hair for locks, your wasting your time and adding buildup thats going to hinder the locking process. If your going to go the backcomb route wash your hair with a residue free shampoo a few times before you do it, and make sure your hair is dry when you do it. Look their is NOTHING wrong with asking questions, but you need to realize the ONLY thing that can produce locks is time, NOTHING ELSE....you will be better off once you realize that, their are some people that will argue it, but they don't know what they're talking about, locking accelerator doesen't do anything but dry your hair out and cause breakage and damage, it just gives the illusion it's helping because it dries your hair out so much. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING in your hair, it's only going to hurt, NO GELS, NO WAX, NOTHING......their is no magic thing you can do to make your hair lock faster, only time.....backcombing doesen't even help it lock faster, it just allows you control of HOW it locks up, in fact with MOST people everything you backcomb is going to unravel before it starts to lock anyway. putting things in your hair to "hold it together" creates faux dreads, your hair needs to be able to move freely in order to lock up, by putting shit in your hair your holding it in one place which is the exact opposite of what needs to happen to attain locks...

Look for some type of castile soap, or a natural/organic soap, it can be in bar form as well, no difference in outcome, "shampoo" is just a marketing gimmick, soap is soap is soap..........I know they sell a Dr. Bronners rip off called Dr. Woods in alot of those megastores.

Also most soaps that are meant for using outdoors, like camping/backpacking soaps are residue free as well............that could get ya started on the right track till you can get something more suitable.

That is the EXACT one I used. Worked pretty well..I just had to be sure and comb from all sides of the dread so that it got all around, otherwise (even though I was twisting from side to side like you're supposed to) it'll only be dreaded on one side.

    tea tree oil
    it'll control anny itchies
    also repells bugs

i would like to correct 1 thing said about putting things in to hold it in plavce technocaly what hes saying is correct however, beads can be used, to hold the ends together, everything still has movement freely above & even inside the beads, but since the movements restricted to a small area its more effective in locking however if theres only an inch or 2 below the bead thats lil less likely to lock up well

the difference though between wax & beads is wax prevents movement & stiffens the hair , but does not allow it to move & knot whiole beads allow movement but restrict it to a clump as uposed to free flying dstraight hair which blows here & there, eventualy forming some knots where it happens to loop around eachother

try a combo, just backcomb some, others basckcomb & force a bead onto.. (take a loop of thread fead it through the bead..stick just the very ends of the hair throiugh the loop then use the loop to pull the hair threough the bead & force upwards till it stops..but try choosing besads with the right size holes that they only go on a lil bit before getting stuck

What do you mean by a loop of thread? Tea tree oil is for the scalp right?

Also, thank you all for being patient with me and helping out =)

The vitamin shoppe I went to didn't have doc bronners shampoo, but they had soaps. I got "18-in-1 Hemp ALMOND PURE-CASTILE SOAP" Ingredients: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut & Organic Olive Oils (w/ Retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojaba, Natural Bitter Almon Fragrance, Citric Acid, Vitamin E.

This will work as shampoo, correct?

My hair is in braids right now to crimp it before starting the dreading process, how should I wash it?
