i wouldn't say i have faith in it - its just what she wrote. but nothing can be objective or absolute without anyone of us being there to witness it - which is why i added that 2nd sentence. so to call it racist is a bit far fetched IMO, just as its far fetched to say it isn't racist.

I don't have to go to Japan to know that the sky out there is blue. I interact with black people in New York enough to know that some of them tip, some don't. Some are rude, some aren't (sounds kind of like white people).

The bigoted mind will single out the behavior that suits the a priori prejudice. And disconsider the behavior that clashes with the a priori prejudice as exceptional - for them.

A black person who's cordial and tips doesn't act black. A white person who is rude and doesn't tip, is acting like a black.

Mind you, I'm all for black people who are rude and don't tip. They have as much right to be rude and not tip as white people obviously do.

i can deal with it being bigoted behavior. saying its racist is different.

i'm all for anyone being rude and not tipping if thats what they want to do. i'm also all for the shop owners removing said rude person from the business after a nice swift shot to the face.

It's stereotyping and I would go as far as to say a lot of it is the subconscious mind at work. There have been plenty of studies with the white=good, black=bad ideal tested, and perhaps it really is ingrained--activated once frustrated.

I guess it's a form of racism, one more innocent, but definitely controllable to an extent. It's about action.

 

You're not being racist as long as you don't let the black people that frequent your restaurant influence your view of black people in general.

But yeah, in general... they're shitty tippers.

She's not stereotyping, she's making an observation based on race. A true observation at that.

Such observations would not be made if black people didn't go out of their way to stand out based purely on racial concepts.
