It is estimated that Jesus Christ was born 2015 years ago (with some room for margin of error). Even though many people including non-chirstians and atheists challenge the idea that Christ ever existed, everyone in the western world accepts that the year number is 2015. (There are obviously other nations around the world that have a different number year on their dating system, but that's beside the point).

This is precisely why I don't care.

However, it would be interesting to set t0 to something a tad more factual... It's easier than 4.5 billion years I suppose.

Everyone has got to pick their battles, and I don't imagine that is one worth fighting, except for the most militant Atheists.

Although I wouldn't really label myself as an Atheist, so....

When the B.C./A.D. system was being calculated, they actually made a mistake in pinpointing the year of Jesus’ birth. Scholars later discovered that Jesus was actually born around 6—4 B.C., not A.D. 1.

  7. As a non-Christian, it doesn't bother me. I don't think the number 2015 belongs to Christ in any way, no matter if people once tried to subjugate us all under Christ. They failed. 2015 is a perfectly good year for it to be. It's all kind of arbitrary anyway. It's got to be some number, and I personally like the feel of 2015. Seems futuristic somehow.

yes, it does bother me. but i am pretty sure any new system that would be installed in its place would be even more annoying. i know all the historical dates and eras by their year numbers. re-learning all that would be a pain in the ass. besides, Robespierre already tried a new system, and it didn't stick.

i use the alternative secular terms though. BCE for before common era. and CE for common era.

i never use AD, or just BC.

There has been many different ways to gauge years or calendars by, so I am fine with the euphemistic secular terms for the Gregorian calendar. We add a leap year every few years and if you drag out the calendar long enough, there are other issues of inaccuracies that arise, but I think it's one area most atheists are likely not to make too big a fuss over.

the years are numbered after jesus' birth? i though he picked year zero to be born in because it would be easier for him to calculate his age that way.
