Well, apart from all the bands you mentioned sucking, I totally agree with that statement. Apart from the 60's, the radio has always sucked.
^ Thank you for being immature and making your bad attitude so apparent - I shan't reply to you again in this thread. =)
To expand, what do you mean by mature? Politically correct? Saying x bands suck shouldn't be taboo, as long as you really feel that way. Maturity doesn't mean not saying what I'm thinking.
i don't miss the whatsocalled grunge because i didn't live it in situ... but i listen to it the 90% of my life
I never liked grunge too much, and I do not automatically think grunge when talking about the 90s music scene. Neurosis was probably my favorite band that formed in the 90s. I like Alice in Chains a lot as well, they are by far my favorite band that is labeled grunge.
None of those bands with the exception of maybe Mudhoney started grunge. Thre just some of the early bands that were aiming it closer to the mainstream. Now Mark Arm of Mudhoney, he started grunge, and no, not even Neil Young. Mark Arm. Green River was THE grunge band. The first.
i love 90's rock...but about the radio thing they do overplay almost every popular song ..like if i heard ants marching by dave mathews band one more time i probally woud have shot myself that was seriously overplayed where i live
There were just quite a few grunge bands that were worth listening to. But, no, for the most part I didn't even miss them at all.
When I think 90's I dont immediately think "grunge". Dont get me wrong, I love fuzzy guitars and all that, but a lot of it began to emulate itself soon after it "started". I think that with the exception of a few later singles, the only grunge music that really still impresses me is Mudhoney's Touch Me Im Sick/Sweet Young Thing Aint Sweet No More 12'' and their Superfuzz Bigmuff EP. I can leave the rest. Pearl Jam is one of the few "real" bands on this earth that make me think that being totally deaf couldnt be all bad. But, as for 90's music in general: Britpop anyone? As far as Im concerned, the 90's was one of the best times for British (and Australian) indie pop bands. Suede's single Metal Mickey is so damn catchy (with some awesome guitars in it) that if I listen to it, I cant get it out of my head for a whole week. But it's not just them. The list is long: Swervedriver, The Pale Saints, Blur, Elastica, The Stone Roses etc. etc. etc. So much good stuff from Ol' Blighty. Over here, I think music was at a peak as well. Custard was still around, and released Wiesinhiemer and Lovearama. In my opinion: Two of the best produced and smartest indie records ever made in Australia. Regurgitator released a few of their best albums and a little band called Turnstyle (from Perth) was playing some amazingly catchy music, putting together fuzzy Nirvana style guitars with twee pop syle Casios. I miss those guys.
Absolutely! Like a lot of others I didn't really get into it until it was half way over, (it started in 1995 when I went away to school for the 1st time) but I have a healthy love and respect for the time and feeling. It came at the end of the 80's excess and the beginning of the early 90's recession. That dejected, disenfranchised volatility exploded into a barrage of no-frills raw, "Yeah-I'm-jaded-and-apathetic-and-dirty-too-so?" thick riffs and power chords that killed the last vestiges of 80's hair metal...(thank you SOOOO much; Kurt really is my hero!). Like a lot of you I'm not just of fan of this genre but of the hard-core at this time and especially later around 2000 when rock in general seemed to die....... What I really like about the movement, (for lack of better word) is the 70's Hindrix-like woodstock influence. I'm not a fan of this time but I like the effects of the gentle melody effects of the flower child mixed with the heavy angry psychedelic riffing...*cough Smashing Pumpkins*. It's just perfect. I can't really speak for all of post grunge that came later; you know before corporate took over the music and style and watered/cheesed it down, but at the time the air was unstoppable. Also, it's not just a genre but a state of mind...unfortunately a lot of it is depressing though. I still wear black boots and wear black t-shirts w/ skulls on them etc. but i'm really not waving any kind of flag or anything; just being myself. If grunge ever comes back I'll be too old to enjoy it the way I did, but at least it will kick all the tennis-shoe wearing emos to the curb like it did hair metal, (both ironically 80's influence; go figure). so anyway... I mean nevermind.........
I think the 90's had the best overall decade of music period. If we were to count a 10 year period, sometime in the late 60's through first half of 70's would be better but just taking a decade 90's was the best. My fondest memory of the 90's was seeing Rage Against the Machine live in 99. I also saw the Rolling Stones in 94 which was cool but not really their decade. This list of bands: Alice in chains Nirvana Radiohead Sublime Hallucinogen/shpongle underworld Chemical Brothers the orb massive attack Tool Primus Rage Against the Machine 2pac Bone thugs n harmony wu tang clan notorious b.I.G green day offspring And many more solid bands. It did have some garbage tho especially closing in on the millenium, but outside of a few great singles and the first few years the 00's sucked in comparison.
I graduated high school in '94 and as I get older I've found that I have less and less need for nostalgia. You have to remember that "Grunge" was a term invented by the advertising department at some record label that bands who were tagged as such generally laughed off. I remember when I heard people say "Grunge" or "Seattle Sound" when I was in high school I thought they were fucking posers. As a musician I'm finding it harder and harder to play with musicians my own age. It feels like they want to play the music that was popular when they were in high school and relive their glory days. I feel like I never had glory days to relive. There are bands from that period that I still like. Soundgarden is great. I love Sublime. I like Pearl Jam but think they kind of blew their load on Ten. I think Janes Addiction is fucking fantastic. Peace Out, Rev J
nirvana, mudhoney, green river, meat puppets.. and so many more awesome bands I wish I got to see! But there's a lot of great bands today that I don't know if I would trade for them.
The truth is that "Grunge" as it got to be called was just another offshoot of punk. It was supposed to have a shelf life. Kurt Cobain was a junkie scam artist. The sad thing is he was telling you he was a scam artist all along. Let's do a quick where are they now. Soundgarden were already together for 7 years by '94 now they're no longer an entity. Alice in Chains had been broken up for about 10 years by the time Layne Staley died. Mother Love Bone didn't even get off the starting block. Pearl Jam were just Mother Love Bone with a different singer and a new guitarist. They are still around but had to change drastically after Eddie Vedder got a stalker. The only reason we still talk about Nirvana is because "St. Cobain died for your sins." It wasn't genious folks it was a junkie wallowing in his own depression free associating with a chorus. How nobody saw his impending suicide is beyond me between the number of gun references on Nevermind and the fact the last song he recorded was called "I hate myself and I want to die." Isn't that a giant fucking cliche. When grunge is satirised that is what they make fun of. Peace Out, Rev J
